Will be upgrading my monitor shortly from a 19" 4:3 to a 1920x1200 24" so want to maximise game playing at the higher resolution so think I need to upgrade some of the rest of my system.

Say I had £300 to spend on upgrades what would be the best options ?

Current spec is Q6600 @ 3.0ghz, 4 gig ram, HD4890, TT 750w psu, Corsair H50 etc

Don't mind mild overclocking on air but don't want to go hard core or full water cooling etc

Stick another HD4890 in crossfire ? Change GFX card, Bigger quad core ? Bite the bullet and go I5/I7 but prob over budget ?

Many Thanks

i wouldnt really be looking to upgrade , u got a real nice system .... if you have no problem with cash then just get another 4890 , i really dont think its worth it upgrading anything else.

Cheers - so 2 votes for another 4890. I guess alternatively Q9650 at £250, HD 5850 at £250. Sell the Q6600 and HD4890 get to get back say £150 - net £350 spend.

How would that compare to current rig of Q6600 with 2 4890's in crossfire ? Any other suggestions ?

I wouldnt bother with either tbh, the 9650 isnt much better than the 6600
And 4890CF beats a 5850, if you want to spend your money look at a SSD or somat :D

Crossfire will depend on the motherboard as to whether it's worth it or not. If it's a P45 or X38/48 board then it will be fine, but if it's a P35 board forget it as the second slot only runs at 4x.

It's a P5Ke deluxe - I think you're right about only being 4x which is annoying as it talks about crossfire all over the manual etc. Would it really make that much difference to 2x 4890's ?

Look, as far as your gaming experience is concerned, do you really think you'll notice the difference between 60 and 62 FPS, for example? Be honest to yourself, unless your into some serious willy waving, do you really think you'll notice any real difference between having 2 x 4890 than just a single card? As I've said before, games aren't exactly over stretching the hardware at the moment, not like it used to yet people seem to be completely obsessed with trying to obtain high FPS with considering without setting clear objectives and what's best for them.

Save yourself some money, stick with your existing set-up. The single 4890 should be fine.. Use the money to treat the girlfriend to a weekend break. Now that will reap it's rewards ;)

Nice idea but I think the wife might think otherwise ;)

Seriously though - Q6600/4890 will be ok to run most games at 1920x1200 at 60fps ? New monitor is coming next week so guess I will give it a go first then :)

To be honest your rig is fine atm, your not going to get much of a difference out of getting two of those cards :). Save your money up untill something comes out which really pushes the boundaries would be my advice.

i.e next year new nvidia cards along with the new 6 core CPU's ( 1000 and its all yours :P )

Yeah, i'd stick with what you've got, there shouldnt be a problem with most games. wait until something really good comes out.
