Hi guys.

After a few years of neglecting to upgrade (other than a SSD) i've finally decided to bite the bullet and bring my PC up to scratch.

Current Build:
CPU - Q6600 (not overclocked)
GPU - GTX 260
Mobo - Asus P5Q Deluxe with 4GB of DDR2 ram
PSU - Tagan 550W
HDD - 1 x 60GB SSD and 3 mechanical (SSD for Windows and core programs, mechanical for everything else)
Monitor - Benq 24" 1900 x 1200

I'll be doing some 3D work in the near future (but probably not long term), and am an avid gamer so something geared towards that would be great :)

I have a feeling I know the answer, but it would be at all worth it to overclock the Q6600 and upgrade the GPU and Ram to keep costs down? I've a feeling i'd just be pumping money into old tech though.

I've budgeted about £700 for everything I need. I'll be keeping my Case, keyboard, mouse, OS and Monitor though.

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!

I would definately upgrade your ageing cpu, i chose the psu cus its on offer but a great unit hope you can cope with the colour.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £717.64
(includes shipping: £11.70)

Thanks for your advice, yeah my PC seems to be struggling more than usual these days, but I think the lack of Ram plays a part too. DDR2 Ram is so expensive as well since no where makes it anymore.

PSU just looks white to me? Which is fine, I was expecting you to mean it was bright pink or something :D

Is your case ATX or mATX?

ATX, I think its an Antec P183. I've seen people have issues with the newer Graphics cards not fitting in their cases, but I think I should be ok, there seems to be a lot of room a long where the graphics PCI-e lane runs.

Hi again.

So after your guys advice and looking round on some other posts, I've come up with:

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £706.89
(includes shipping: £0.00)

Is there anything that jumps out as being unsuitable together or that could be replaced with something better for around the same price, (Like the Ram) or anything that i'm missing? I included the thermal paste as I don't have any at home.

Also the mobo/cpu bundle is appearing as out of stock on it's product page, but in stock when viewed in my basket. Anybody come across this before? I'm hoping it is actually in stock as it's got a good discount as part of the Black Friday deals and I'd hope I haven't missed out on ordering one at that price!

Thanks, Lawz

The 970 in the above basket is 280mm ±a few mm

I guess whatever variant wouldnt be far off this legnth either.

You 'might' need a more powerful PSU, that card says minimum 600w required.

Thanks for the heads up, I had a scout around and settled on:

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £88.49
(includes shipping: £10.50)

Went with the G2 as the 650W Superflower is out of stock and Ocuk weren't sure when it would next be in stock.

Everything else is in stock except the Mobo/Cpu bundle which should be with me next week sometime. I'm taking the extra time to decide on a graphics card, as I'm a bit torn between the GTX 970 and AMD 390. If anyone has any input that would be great, or I'll head over the graphics forum and see what others have said already.

Thanks for the input everyone, excited to get it all up and running next week! :D

I would lean more towards the 390 just because of the 8gig of video ram, and from early reports the AMD cards are performing a lot better than there Nvidia counterparts when using Directx12, the 390 just seems to be slightly more futureproof in my eyes.

Well my last 2 items arrived today, excited to get it all up and running (So long as I don't bork it up).
