ive got around 300 quid to spend on upgrading my pc (amd 64 3000 s939, 6800gt, 1gb 3200 ram, asus a8v and unbranded psu), id preferably like to go pci-e, what stuff could i get for the money?

how about overclocking up the cpu, selling your one gb ram and getting two, and getting a x1800xt, if theres spare money get a new psu like tagan or enermax.

Asus A8N-SLi SE nForce4 SLi (Socket 939) 66
BFG 3DFuzion GeForce 7600 GT 256MB 117
G.Skill 2GB DDR ZX PC3200 (2x1GB) CAS2 Dual Channel Kit 140
FSP Sparkle AX500-A Blue Storm 500W 58

Total 381

more than your budget but you can make up the different by selling your old stuff

Surely he should get :

Asrock 939Dual-SATA2 (Socket 939 & Upgradable to AM2) AGP & PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-002-AK) £36.95 (£43.42 Including VAT

Tagan TG480-U01 480W ATX2.0 SLi Compliant Silent PSU (CA-000-TG) £50.50 (£59.34 Including VAT

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego (Socket 939) - Retail (CP-121-AM£77.95 (£91.59 Including VAT

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC3200 Value Dual Channel Kit CAS3 (GE2GB3200BDC) (MY-046-GL) £114.95 (£135.07 Including VAT

£295.00 ish before delivery changed the cpu to retail as i don't know what sort of cooler you have, you could then sell your old parts and get a more powerful graphics card. Current one is still good enough, unless your monitor is huge.

no point going for a 7600GT you wont see much of a difference in performance over the 6800GT, your motherboard is a must, but at it i would go dual core, so something like the cheap asrock conroe motherboard coupled with a pentium D 805, some half decent DDR2, then sell the rest of your gubbins for a decent graphics card and PSU...

i read somewhere that the combined agp/pci-e motherboards were a bit rubbishy

edit: what socket do dual cores use? could i get a motherboard with dual sockets but only use one socket?

dual core processors use just one socket... the pentium D 805 i suggested uses the LGA775 socket T design, its one physical processor with 2 logical cores...

Kicks, the Asrock 939 dual is a brilliant mobo for the price, does 300fsb, they have great potential, check out some of the oc's in the asrock 939 dual dedicated thread. :)
My Amd 3000+ 64, is at 2.6ghz

It also supports AM2 in future and dual core ready.

its not in my sig :)

6800gt, but i think thats overheating (see my other thread no linkage), so i want to replace that and the psu is being a bit dodgy as well

you should be able to get around £100 for that 6800 gt if its in working order, so you could add an extra £100 to your budget

Personally i reckon your current system is fine. Are you getting poor performance in games?

I'd hold off buying a graphics card now since you have a 6800 and wait till a directx10 card comes. You won't experience much of a performance increase with dual core just yet since games don't support it. I assume you just play games :p

Edit:

If its just overheating buy a new cooler for it and get a new PSU like a Seasonic

The above really is a good idea, if your 6800GT is working.

And many people have that Asrock board & many people compliment it. Infact i have 2 friends who have it & have had no problems whatsoever. They overclock pretty well too.

Otherwise if you do need a replacement card the X1800GTO will do very nicely though for just £20 more you could get the Connect3D X1800XT which is a LOT better!
