Spec me ans ADSL Modem-Router

Hi,
I am looking for an ADSL modem router to connect 2 pcs (via network cables) and sometimes a laptop by WiFi. I want to be able to switch off the wifi when not in use. I currently use virgin broadband and am getting poor line speeds so anything that would improve this would be great. I have an additional problem in that a lift shaft goes through my flat, but I suppose that I will have to live with this!

I quite like Netgear routers, but check the specific model number against Virgin for compatibility.

Linksys routers are also good, but more for the technically inclined, because they are highly configurable (but take more effort and a bit more fiddly than Netgear).
