Hey all,

After finding ants accumulating in the bathroom the other day I went hunting to see if I could find their entry point!

Today I mowed the lawn and literally found a part of it crawling with the little barstewards. Once I'd shaven their haven ( ;) :p ) with the lawn mower I could see ants with wings, without wings and also loads of eggs. Any man knows, finding things like this in a haven isn't great so I put it to you ocukers

What can I use to make sure the bloody things are dead? I fed them copious amounts of hot water and Ant killer spray but I feel I need to do more!

Thanks :)

ant killer spray normally does it, killing the ants and workers is easy, you need to find and kill the queen though else she will relocate and start all over again.

Nippon Ant killer liquid. It carries the poison back to their nest and wipes out the entire army.

I live in a road where everyone, including myself, has problems with Ants nests and I've tried virtually every product out there to try and see off the little blighter's! Best thing I have found that works inside the house is good old fashioned ant powder, that can be spread over a wide surface area, the bait traps etc are fairly ineffective in my opinion as I've noticed that the ants do start to ignore them after a while......

With the powder though, once you hoover it up etc they start to appear again fairly quickly!

For outside nothing seems to work better than a bit of bleach in boiling water poured directly onto the entry point or nest!

Failing that "Nuke them from orbit"

One of these seemed to work well for me:

The stuff called 'Ant and insect killer powder' from Wilkinsons.

We had a small infestation once because there was food on the floor, initially we put down honey and they all came running in and got stuck.

Then we killed them all, it was like the holocaust down there.

In rented property - is it the responsibility of the landlord or the tenant to sort out this problem?

Our landlord effectively told us to get stuffed.

Ofcourse he did, it's not his problem. That's like asking him to vacuum your floors because they're dirty.

It must be the season. I have ants all over my back garden and some on my path at the front. Need to buy a good product to get rid of them all. At one point some were coming in the house but they haven't done that for a while.

So is it the powder or the liquid that is best for killing them at the source?

Depending on what ants you have, they can benefit your garden. The common black ants (which I assume you are having problems with) live beneath the soil and as such are natural aerators for your lawn. Good in my case as my soil is quite clayey and compact. Without the ants, it would be quite a labour intensive task to do if I did it myself. While they do cause the odd bald patch on the lawn, you can easily re-seed over it.

It's when they come into the house it becomes a bit of a nuisance. But the liquid ant killer I mentioned in my earlier post is a very effective pest control and soon gets rid of them within a few days. All you do is add a few drops by the entry point in which they come into the house each night, they will eat the poison and carry the rest back to their nest killing the whole colony. The powder stuff and boiling water is ok for spot killing, but you won't know how deep their tunnels are and you will unlikely get the queen doing so. Instead, you will probably just kill off a large patch on your lawn. Without killing the queen/s, she will continue producing more.
