I work with my business partner and we're just after a cheap and cheerful NAS-ish setup. The router's downstairs and I think there's a free ethernet port (it's not run by us) so I'm pretty sure we can just plug into that.

I've just seen a NetGear 2-Bay Diskless NAS Chassis for £50. Would this be one of the best solutions, or are we better off getting an external HDD that has an ethernet port already?

Thanks :).

Do you need it to do anything fancy? I.e RAID, DNLA features, or just simple storage?

Netgear sounds like a bargain and has the option of adding any old drives you may have or just your own choice of capacity with a space to upgrade, as opposed to being stuck with just one drive.

No, nothing fancy, just to save us the hassle of constantly passing 8GB CF cards back and forth. Will also be used for mutual files, ie accounts, receipts, etc. Will probably buy a couple of 1TB SATAs to stick in it.

The Netgear box is on a competitor's site obviously so can't link, but the model's MS2000-100UKS. Recommended then?

I think it would be perfect for what you're proposing to use it for, plus it has some extra features you might use in future. For that price I think its hard to go wrong. If you could PM the site I'd appreciate it, I have a few spare HDD's lying around that could be put to good use!

It might be quite slow for large transfers, but I'm guessing the CF read speed would be more of a limiting factor.
