Well my VXR will be gone by the end of the week, this leaves me with around £17000 for a new car. I don't have a 'type of car' I want so to speak just a few requirements that it must have.

  • Cruise Control
  • Petrol N/A
  • >4 Cylinders
  • RWD or AWD
  • Lots of toys, Climate, Auto lights ect..
  • Sporting credentials
  • Well built

The number of seats and body shape don't matter. Running costs aren't a major concern but I dont want something that will be constantly digging into my pockets to fix.

I have a shortlist of cars that have caught my eye and these are..

Monaro VXR 6.0L
BMW 330ci/335ci
BMW Z4 3.0si Coupé
Audi S4 (facelift)
Audi TT Mk2 3.2 quattro

As you can see these are quite different from each other. I'd just like some advice on what to look for on the above cars and any other suggestions that would possibly meet my requirements. Once I have a nice list I'll start test driving them and then make my decision.

Do you have any practicality requirements at all? Presumably you could live with a small boot and 2 seats?

If you can afford to fuel it, I'd have the Monaro out of that list - just to have that V8 in my life. 330/335 would be the logical choice, but why not look at the saloon too if you're considering an S4?

I have zero practicality requirements other than no soft top. The Monaro does seem my favorite but the very heavy clutch and gear box puts me off. I'm 5'5 and skinny. =/ I'm not a fan of the E90 saloons and I'm also one of the few that prefer the SE over the Sport in the coupé form.

Yes, although I drove the LS1 which is the 5.7L but I'm guessing the box and clutch would be the same.

VXR8 http://pistonheads.com/sales/1781966.htm ?

I love these :D

I looked at the VXR8 but the brakes are £1000 a corner which puts me off. I'll have a look at the SL500's.

I would have thought an SL500 would cost more to run than a VXR8...I don't have any experience of either... its just a guess.

One of these days I'm going to reccomend a Corvette in one of these threads, just to beat Lashout to it :D

Another vote for a sports Merc. Dosent need to be a 500.

One of these days Iain. One of these days..... :p

Basic C5 LS1 6-speed or automatic isn't a bad buy either, and slightly more 'tame' for daily driving purposes - not that a Z06 is any trouble in daily use, in fact, it's a breeze - but obviously there's a marginally higher element of you putting your foot down and suddenly you're going very, very fast without much effort :D

I recommend the Corvette or the Monaro which you have been saying you want for some time now. It can only be a V8 :D

A Mercedes SL500 is a magnificent car, although it's running costs are rather higher than anything else mentioned here, I don't mean a bit either I mean so much so you would really notice. Bear that in mind.

E46 M3? E92 330 is obviously much more modern and nicer, if you want an involving drivers car though it has to be the M3, if you don't mind an old gen car with a bit of an iffy image.
