Hey guys I'm once again in these forums looking for advice on what my brother should upgrade to.

He currently has an E8600 @ 4.4Ghz / 4GB Ram / Asus Rampage Formula, which he's had since around 2007 sometime so its about time he upgraded!

His budget is around £250 and he just games so an i7 isn't needed here unless its no extra cost of course.

I know the best route here is the MM but I was wondering if there is a suitable brand new solution that isn't going to be a poor choice?

Looking at all the cheapest including an i5 3570k (Never been a fan of AMD CPUs)

The cheapest I can get is around £245.93 brand new with going for ones with reviews and no bad reviews online but I really could use some help here.

His current GPU:

CPU

Always stick with intel for reliability, performance and always the K version for overclocking!

Mobo

I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to motherboards anymore and if they effect performance much from the budget ones to the top end ones or if its all brand names/cosmetic.

What do you even look for in a motherboard? Max ram speed? Ram slots? USB 3.0? Sata 3? Overclocking limitations?

Last time I upgraded everyone was raging on how 1600mhz DDR3 was all that was needed.

Thanks in advance :)

You will need a Z87 board to overclock, that B85 board that yoyo specced won't be able to overclock and neither will the OP's one either :( Look for a Z87 chipset or go for a non-k chip if you don't want to overclock

Oh I 100% want to overclock, whats the point otherwise? :D

I'll find out about the board yoyo! ;) Awesome boards at their time! Its a shame there isnt a good quad core that can sit on it but.. I think DDR2 is another limitation regardless these days!

Yeah he has a cooler :)

Doesn't have to be mATX and I'd rather not go with AMD stulid but thanks :)

Ooook, so his motherboard actually just died (bad news for you yoyo I think!). He gets paid on Wednesday and says that his budget will be around £350 which should allow him to go for Intel correct?

Ok so its payday for him, the budget is £350!

Just having a look myself, OEM = no heatsink at all right, its just the chip? (he has a heatsink anyway)

I'm a bit lost on the motherboard really.

All I remember is when I bought mine, I wished I'd have got one with the ability to SLI/Crossfire if I ever needed to.. though I never needed to.

Advice appreciated!

You're right on the OEM part, no heatsink. Can you tell us what his current cooler is? It needs to have the right mounting options for at least one of these to work (same mounting holes): 1156, 1155, 1150.

Yeah he has an Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro Rev2 I believe, I checked and it has the right mountings for the CPU.

Are the Z87 boards the only ones that can overclock?
