So my aircon has gone in my mkIV Golf Gti and it's uneconomical to repair, so I'm looking around seeing whats in the market and possibly test driving local examples soon (if I know I can sort finances out) before seriously searching further afield for the ideal model.
My list of requirements are

Budget: £7k-£8k
1) Petrol and Manual
2) auto-climate
3) Sporty engine and looks
4) Built in Bluetooth/decent radio (dab is a bonus) so no more after market dodginess
5) Damn comfy seats like my Golf's leather recaros.

I do have a longer list but it's getting fussy like leather steering wheel, heated wing mirrors so not really top priorities.

I'm currently looking around at;
r56 Mini Cooper S JCW, although I think I need to drop the JCW for budget
Facelift Octavia VRS
And less so an other Golf GTi (maybe edition 30) and the Audi Variants.

Anything else I could be looking at? I'm open to suggestions, whats the beemers like in this range?

Seems like the car you have atm is pretty ideal. Might be worth just biting the bullet and fixing the aircon. You might get another car which has problems of its own.

How can faulty aircon in a MkIV Golf possibly be 'uneconomical to repair' and require binning the car in favour of something costing £7-8k, especially when finances are not sorted out?

Just run it without aircon or pay to get it fixed if the rest of the car is fine!

I changed cars at the start of last month and now it's sat in a garage with a ****ed gearbox! Better the devil you know etc.

I'd get a mk5 golf gti if I had 8 grand burning a hole.
Is your mk4 the 1.8 or the 2.0? I believe the mk5 2.0 is supposed to wipe the floor over the 1.8, and the 2.0 in the mk4 was pitiful anyway.

You could always look at a Seat Leon petrol FR? You could just about get a facelift version with nicer interior and better ride(?) like this one for your money.
