Have always had cheap ikea crap in the rented flats I've lived in. Looking to get a proper set now.

I want to get some very good stuff that will last a very long time. I'd be fine spending £500 on this if I'm getting 20 years out of it.

Requirements:
Can handle being in the dishwasher
Solid build and won't bend
Not "ornate"
Not made of expensive silver

So basically if Dyson made cutlery, I'd want theirs.
Any suggestions?

What are you doing to your cutlery to bend it!?

You'll easily be able to pick up a set from a supermarket that'll happily go in a dishwasher and not disintegrate in your hand for £20.

£500 jebus, I could understand if you did want ornate and solid Silver but for general use buy anything that isn't bargain basement.

Do you just want knifes, forks and spoons or also dessert spoons, pastry forks, tea spoons, soup spoons, small/large cutlery, serving cutlery etc?

I'm in a similar position myself, I haven't started looking yet though.

So... lets be generous and assume 8 sets of cutlery - that's £62.50/set - assuming 4 items, that's just over £15 per item...

You want to spend £15 each on a knife, fork, spoon and tea-spoon?!:confused::eek::confused:

I'd expect mother of pearl handles with gold filigree and solid titanium blades for that :p

Edit: and a Faberge egg to store them in :p

We got a nice set (knife/fork/spoon/teaspoon) of Viners kids cutlery for ~£10 and it seems very good quality, I wouldn't want to spend much more than that tbh...

Don't need to spend that sort of money to get a good set, your money but £££ doesn't mean it will last.

Villeroy & Boch do their 'Victor Cutlery 24 piece' set on Amazon for a reasonable price (~£60). Should last for years and years.

We have Arthur Price cutlery from our wedding list but I know it probably cost near 1/2 your budget and I don't see it lasting less than 30 years (only to be replaced due to changes in taste). John Lewis do a nice (to me) Arthur Price set under 'Arthur Price Old English Cutlery Set, 44 Piece' and well within your budget but still £300 to me is very expensive.

What I would say is depending on what you need, you may want to find somewhere that does individual pieces as we ended up getting more knives and forks as we get quite a few people around for meals so needed 16+ of each piece.

We wanted new cutlery at the start of this year. Went to John Lewis and turned into cutlery snobs after comparing "cheap" stuff against Robert Welch. The RW felt like a better quality item with the overall weight and balance.

We paid £140 for this 56 piece set:

https://www.robertwelch.com/dining/...lvern/malvern_bright_cutlery_set_56_piece.htm

We got ours from Selfridges (though they don't seem to stock RW anymore) - lugging it across the Trafford Centre proved how heavy it is. We were going to go for the Stanton range but the Malvern from Selfridges was a good saving. Also got a 3 piece serving spoon set for £20.

I'd say pop into John Lewis to look at the styles, then wait for the January sales to see if you can get a good discount.

+1 for WMF. My parents have a set of this and it is great cutlery.

Probably where I'm going to start looking. They seem to do all the additional pieces too.

Check out the Arthur Price Old English. My parents bought a new set soon after I got a full set of Robert Welch Warwick set and I prefer theirs.

Oh, any set, try to find balanced knives.

We got the fancy set from Tesco when you collected tokens etc - The handles of the knives are so heavy if you move a plate with them on the knives will spin off and land on the carpet/floor

So we only use them when guests are over.

Expensive =/= Nice to use.

I think we have bought two sets of cutlery in the last 30 years, and we only changed the set because we wanted different coloured handles!
Think the last set cost £12.99...

We've got Robert Welch stuff from John Lewis. It's a bit like this set:

But not quite so bendy looking. We've had it since getting married (from the wedding list, you see) about 8 years ago and it's very much going strong - it will outlive us easily.

It's bloody lovely, to be honest. You really notice the difference with the **** stuff other people have :D
