Hi chaps,

I'm in a Uni house at the moment, and we have a 10Mb NTL connection. We need a router that:

a) Works with Cable, not ADSL
b) Has Wireless + 4 Ethernet ports
c) Is not crap

Part c) is as follows... We originally started with an Oldish Netgear Wireless router. It was OK, but randomly disconnected and wouldn't work with Encryption. Fine, we thought, we'd go out and buy a new one. We Went with a Belkin G+ model. From day 1 this was shoddy... wireless signal was crap and it slowed the entire network down when we used it.

Again, fine we thought, and took it back to the hell-hole of a shop that I won't mention. After throwing some terms like "packet loss" and "TCP sliding windows" (grade A BS basically), the guy agreed that we could swap it for something else. We opted for the Netgear WPN824 v2 RangeMAX Wireless router. Hurrah, finally, we had the option to use wireless around the house! Everything was going peachy, too, until we fired up BitTorrent.

Oh dear.

The WPN824 has a really low "Max connections" limit, which basically means that as soon as 1 of us starts torrenting the whole thing grinds to a stop. We can't be doing with this, as we, er, download lots of legal things through BitTorrent and as such we need a router that doesn't crap out on us.

Basically, please can we have a router that can support BitTorrent connections and not actually freeze up on us. It's not too much to ask really. There will be 5 PC (3 using BitTorrent) and we would also like throttling (QoS) so we all get a fair share.

Thanks for any help received.

The WPN824 is generally known for it's problems.

I'm using the WPNT834 which works fine, although I only have a single PC connected through a WPN311.

With BitTorrent, I typically have less than 50 connections open, but I tested a couple of torrents with over 500 active connections in utorrent and left the PC running for over 24hours. The WPNT834 allows 180 simultaneous connections, but it didn't have a problem with utorrent hammering away at it.

Uptime? It's been running for weeks without being reset.

From the sounds of your experiences, you could do worse than trying out the WPNT834.

How much are you looking to spend? A Draytek is nothing to be scoffed at - ok, it migh be overkill here but it is certainly one of the best routers you can buy without forking out for a Cisco.

Other than that, what about a Speedtouch or Linksys (possibly flashed with DD-WRT)?

Was thinking of that Linksys router, but the GS version, and then the Linux firmware. Should be good hopefully.

Thanks all for your help, really appreciated.

You'll be hard pushed to find a new GS v3 (32/8) or lower as after that they reduced the GS' memory/flash 16/4 - the same as the GL or G V4 and then castrated it down to 16/2 so you can only run the micro versions of DD-WRT or Tomato iirc.

Got a D-Link DI-624 Cable/DSL Router & its excellent. Highly recommend the D-Link range, maybe the same or the D-Link DI-634M or D-Link DIR-635 ;)
