If for encoding/nmbercrunching downgrade the gpu and up the cpu/ram/motherbard to an i7 920, 3x2gb ddr3 1600 and a gugabyte x58 ud3r

yes manly games but HDD is not a top priority i have the same PSU in my spec (post ina min) i was heading down the Intel route tho...?

and am torn between ATI or nvidia

I would suggest going i7 or amd am3/an2+ at this pint, s775 is going to die and i don't thing the newer quad core would be that much of an improvement

Currently I'd suggest goiing with ati unless a you play a lot of physx enabled games or b want to use a cuda program like badaboonm

I personally went for an i7 with an ati card

psu is up to an i7 plus 489-, rrecently built a computer for a cousin

don't neglect you data storage substem, the computer is only as slow as it's slowest part

alternatively if you are willing to overclock your current processor and keep your current motherboard and ram, I would suggest getting the 4890, additional cooling for you processor and an ssd drive to use for OS and programs and a 1tb drive for storage

The ssd will make the system feel very snappy and cut boot/load times

If you've already got a Q6600 i can't see there being much difference with a Q6700 spec system, you'd have to go i7 if you want a step up from that or maybe look at the Q9xxx range of quads. Is this a new spec to replace your current Q6600 or are you building this for someone?

am sorry i forget you guys think outside the box =p

this is a new Rig from scratch that is for another member in the family,

i will how ever be upgrading mine soon .
