Been a while since I built my own PC so sorry if get too noob at any point :)

Budget: around £1000k Don't want to spend more than I need but happy to pay when its worth it

Target:

  • Out and out gaming rig.
  • Want to run games on max settings getting high FPS on anything up to a 4k monitor.
  • Want it to be future proof and easily upgradeable in the future so I don't have to start from scratch.
  • Want to do VR in the future.
  • Won't be running multi monitors.
  • Will be looking to use Nvidas Shield technology to stream to other rooms.
  • I won't be looking to over clock CPU so no need for crazy cooling ?
  • Be nice if it was quite and not too noisy

Was thinking something along the lines of...

Motherboard: Asrock k6 - can I over clock the memory and leave the CPU ?
CPU: Intel 6700k - Presuming Skylake is a fine choice ?
Memory: 2x8gb := 16GB
Graphics: Nvidia Gtx 970
HD: 500gb SSD
Case: Phanteks Enthoo Pro M looked alright but open to ideas
PSU: whatever makes sense

Any help appreciated....

People are using 980Ti's to max settings with 60+ FPS @ 1440p, and even then, on some games, some settings have to be brought down a notch or two (like grass for example). A 970 isn't a good card for 4K, even if you add another later in SLI, because of the memory limit (whether 3.5 or 4GB). Your budget won't allow for a 980Ti so have to lower expectations a bit or increase it.

Skylake i7 is a good choice for up to two cards and an M.2 SSD. They are also easier to cool than the Intel chips (Devil's Canyon, Haswell etc) they succeeded, so a mild overclock to 4.5GHZ won't (shouldn't) break a sweat with even a basic but decent £15-20 cooler.

Yes, you can XMP (single click) the memory to "overclock" it to its rated speed, and even try overclocking it more if you like. And CPU speed won't change.

Do you need Windows included?

Thank you for the feedback!

Ok forget 4k... I won't be getting a 4k monitor / tv for a while anyway. If it all... Who knows... My current monitors / TV do 1080p so lets keep that the focus for this build with a mind to buying a new graphics card sometime in the future to add the power to do it (when their price drops). Is that more realistic ?

I already have Windows 10 licenses. No need to worry about peripherals either.

So with this in mind what would you suggest ? :)

Can drop to a 250GB SSD and/or cheaper CPU cooler to bring back down to budget. Also could spend more for that ASRock motherboard you like.

H600 cools 6700K's very well. Stock fan can be replaced if not satisfied with noise levels after creating fan profile.

PSU can run 2 x 980Tis if you ever need (or any 2 x 250/300W TDP video cards) and comes with 7 year warranty.

£10 more will land you faster Fury or Savage 2666MHz RAM. Not much difference in the majority of games but nice to have.

Thanks for that!!!

Regarding the memory... The motherboard manual says...

Supports DDR4 3600+(OC)*/3200(OC)/2933(OC)/2800(OC)/2400(OC)/2133 non-ECC, un-buffered memory

Doesn't mention 2666mhz... Is it worth going as high as I can afford ?

It will support it.

Ask yourself how much is it worth to you to gain just 0.5 or 1 FPS in most games, when a little OC on CPU and GPU will gain a lot more than that? The 2400MHz 16GB is around £60 just now and there are no significant inmprovements in gaming beyond that. I kind of like the idea of 2666MHz though and would pay £10 more for it (or faster if there were some nice deals going on). But wouldn't pay more than that. Up to you. Can always try overclocking the RAM a little more anyway.

Thanks for your help so far. Been giving it some thought and I wont have time over the next month to build and my wife has expressed (told me) a concern that she wants it to be quite, nice looking and low impact.

So.... Decided to head down the micro-atx route and going to get OcUK to build it if parts ever stop going out of stock, the case I liked went out of stock while preparing this.

What do you think so this ? Price is going up :)

I would do the system above but swap out the 970 for a 980ti Which will probably bring you up to the £1300 mark of your silent system, then invest in a 50p packet of ear plugs for the missus.
