Yo!

Started playing recently until my Amp packed up, it was a terrible "Starter" amp. Need a new one, <£100. Whats best? :) (Vox are good from what I've heard)

Also, is it possible to get an amp that would be suitable for a bass aswell?

TA!!!

Try and bag yourself a vox mate they are great. I wouldn't want to run a bass through one, maybe with headphones in because your damage the speaker at volume.

As long as you don't turn the drive/gain & volume up too much (i.e. past half way with the volume, maybe a bit less with the gain) then you should be fine.

Up your budget just a little to £160 and bag yourself a Roland Cube 60- you always get your money's worth when it comes to music equipment that little financial extra bags you a whole lot more.

This amp is fab as it has all the qualities and flexibility of a good price amp but also drops in a multi-effects processor- some details below : :)

Powerful 60-watt output in a compact, 12-inch speaker design.
Built-in 9 COSM guitar amp models, including JC, British Combo and R-Fire.
New Dyna Amp feature offers expressive control over enhanced dynamics and tone transitions based on picking style.
Six classic built-in Roland effects, including Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Tremolo and independent Delay/Reverb.
Multiple outputs, including Recording/Phones Out, Line Out, Tuner Out and Ext Speaker Out (for connecting external cabinets).
Channel switching, delay/reverb and effect on/off control via optional footswitch.

I've played this amp on long sessions and for over 2 years - it's a good'un :)

Vox amps are great sure, but not on the budget your looking for ;)

edit/ I'd ask for dmpoole's opinion on this matter as I feel is probably the most experienced member on matters like this :)

I have an Orange Crush 30, pretty no frills but it sounds the business.

It was £120 a few years ago but can be found for £100.

I'd be tempted to go and have a play with one of these too:

What style do you play?

For metal, the Line 6 probably wins, for a more Vintage Rock or Blues sound it may be worth trying some of the simple valve amps:

Like all things though it's best to go and listen yourself, one mans noise is another mans perfect tone. Buying amps can be addictive until you find your own sound.

Cheers

Thanks for the suggestions. Obviously wont be gigging so both suggestions seem pretty awesome. Takes me ages to buy things, but I guess which ever I buy im not going to be dissapointed, all do the same thing? :)

they will all sound different - go and play each one :)

I was recommended an orange amp before but when playing it just didn't feel 'me'. I couldn't get the sound out of it that I wanted.

I really disliked it ! but then I have friends who swear by them - like with guitars- go and play them- sometimes no matter the recommendation it won't work for you.

Go play! :D

:D Not really.
I don't know a great deal about small amps and I would always recommend a nice valve Marshall over anything else.
However, within the price range I don't think there is a 'better' one and they will all do what you're after.
I do know theres a Line 6 combo on the way with built in backing tracks which is suposed to be amazing - don't know how much though. http://line6.com/spiderjam/movies.html

I have a Vox Valvetronix and cant complain really, it has a good range of sounds, cleans much better than anytinh else but much better than any of the base level Marshall amps I tried.

i love roland amps! they're great and have evrything u need for a starter! but the line 6 spider is also fantastic my bfs bro has one and its really good!
