Well... after an eventful day, it appears I've fried my CPU - saw some scorch marks around the socket, and to the sides of the CPU its self.

It was a beautiful Phenom II X4 - didn't even overclock - a bit of an old motherboard so I'm probably due an upgrade anyway.

Previous setup: Phenom (3GHz), 4GB ram, some Gigabyte motherboard.

Would like to maybe try an Intel setup, but budget is limited.

What would you suggest - its all together with a radeon 5770 which seemed to play most things I threw at it on medium(ish) settings - latest game being Titanfall which played nicely.

I won't really overclock, so cheap as chips but relatively good performance is what I'm looking for (anything around the same as the old setup would be just fine).

Thanks!

Is your ram DDR 3?

My parts are rather old - still DDR2 for the ram!

Am guessing there is no chance to get anything semi decent for the £200 mark? :D

Are all your hard drives and optical drives SATA? Also an AMD alternative if you don't mind going with them again:

No optical drives to worry about - I have a 120gig SSD and a 1TB 'normal' SATA.

How comparable is the AMD to the Intel setup - would I really see any 'real world' (and I'm not talking about benchmarking etc) advantages going Intel?

You could quite possibly see some difference going Intel, I know you said not benchmarking but at the bottom of this comparison there's some gaming benches where even a previous gen Intel CPU starts to pull ahead. It depends on if you feel it's enough of a difference to make it worth the extra £50.

Groovy!

Thanks everyone for the help - I think I will go the Intel route with the setups suggested - maybe even try and source some ram from MM to save a few more quid :D
