Hiya all

Just been given the chalenge by a friend to upgrade his system for him, he does video de decoding andnis running on a old 775 setup and needs a upgrade

Does not run games and his old graphics card will do.

About 300 to spend give or take a few quid. From whatni understand with video decoding its all about cores and speed, but i dont do this so not sure on best hardware for the task

All we need is cpu, mobo and ram

A better cooler would be nice for noise and if possible a overclock (hardware depandant)

Cheers :)

Absolutely no overclocking with this, you need a "K" CPU and a P67 or Z68 motherboard for that.

But the CPU is fast at stock - http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core-i5-2500-2400-2300.html

I assume you went for the 8gb of ram over the 2500k as ram is important for video decoding ? I have no idea when it comes to this area of pc's i just game :-)

Thats right, more RAM is better for this type of use, you do have a 64bit OS?

The 2500K CPU has an unlocked multiplier, a slight MHZ increase and a stronger onboard GPU core, both no use to you as you said he had a old graphics card.

I was thinking z68 and 2500k with 4gb of ram but as said i dont know so seems i will be better off with the 8gb of ram, yes win 7 64 bit had already been purchased as has new case and monitor :-) just need the new cpu etc will the stock cooler be noisy ?

I havent heard it personally, mines in the box and never will be used as I got something bigger and better.

I would think a 2500K with 4GB of RAM would be better than a 2400 with 8GB of RAM.

The 2500K can be overclocked to over 4GHz even on the stock cooler and it would be much easier in the future to upgrade the RAM than the processor.

MSI P67A-G45 Intel P67 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard (Sandybridge) ** B3 REVISION ** £99.98 Chosen as it's in stock.

Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor £161.99 On offer until tomorrow morning.

Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit £39.98 Chosen as it will be easier to find another 4GB of the same in the future.

Overclocking may be reduced slightly if you end up filling all 4 RAM slots in the future but it will still be well over 4GHz.

If cores are everything and speed is also good, why not Phenom X6 route?

No, I have no idea about video decoding, just saying :p

A Phemom X6 build would be cheaper, and might squeze in 8GB of RAM, but it wouldn't be as quick as Sandybridge especially considering the overclocking potential of Sandybridge.

2500K, quicksync, Z68? Integrated graphics possibly better than his old graphics card as well. QuickSync support depends on software.

Offers end... well, today. 2500K will probably shoot up again, and the memory on offer will change.

1 x Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor £161.99

Cheers Quite like the look of this build, I have overclocked my 2500k and it was a doddle to get it to 4.6 so cant see why i cant get a stable 4.5 for him that should tare through his Decoding i guess ?
