I have spent the last week trying to get decent quotes for a UK DC2 but am struggling to get anything decent under £700+ especially once modifications are factored in and the possibility of track day cover.

I'm 24
7yrs no claims (will of course get this protected, but = more £££)
5k per annum
Mods: Manifold-backbox (inc de-cat;)), intake, ECU + re-map, brake discs + pads + lines, various engine bracing (strut bracing etc).
Garaged
Thatcham CAT1 alarm/Imob

FYI the only mods on the current car I have my eye on are the new manifold + backbox and I wil want to do more as listed above :D:D:D

I know that insurance is a bonkers thing that no one can predict, but at the moment the best policy is also a fairly expensive one. Flux have quoted me £790 wth a good policy giving £500 excess, all cosmetic mods free of penalty (wheels, suspension, wheels etc BUT NOT engine etc) etc. The likes of admiral are nearer £600, but every mod adds on circa £14-20 bringing it up to about £680 last time I checked, but will only be replaced by OEM parts. Also tried greenlight and got a nice £700 quote with a better policy than Flux but the underwriters are 'Highway' whom I have heard some horror stories about (RX-7 on fire ;)).

Any idea on who else I should try and the best tricks to lower the quote further. So far I have:

Added the Mrs + mother = Saved £80+ on admiral.
Limited myself to 5k miles.
Job tweaked through moneysaving expert.

My Elise + 2bular + HIDs + uprated brakes (all declared) is done through Adrian Flux underwritten by Equity Red Star. Was £800. Nobody else came close.

Don't think they do track cover though so you have to get that separately.

Declared items won't get replaced if damaged in a crash. You need an agreed value policy for that.

£680 sounds pretty good really.

What kind of bracing? Mine came out of the factory with all the optional braces so it's not a mod. :p

Do you have to declare it if you're installing what are optional extras out of the factory?

I pay £630 - I'm 23 with only 2 years no claims, mods declared (mahoosive front discs :p), CAT1 alarm/immob and with the "drive other cars" things.

That's with Bell Direct, you tried them?

edit; I see you're in "Londonshire", unlucky. I'm in glorious, crime-free Stoke, that's probably the difference. :D

Sky insurance were very good for me, underwritten by Chaucer. Insured my DC5 at 24years old, 4 years NCD, garaged, Cat1 Immob for £600FC.

They were very good when insuring my modified MR2 too :)

Nathan - I think it must be quite good and I'm expecting too much. But both Flux (mine was Equity RS too) and Greenlight said mods would be replaced like for like. Not a biggy to be honest as if I did ever have a prang then buying back the salvage and selling on would be on the cards anyway.

Is going for the cheapest the best thing to do, as I'm thinking that whatever happens in the case of an accident then all insurance companies will try and shaft me anyway. I'm a very careful driver anyway and don't mess around, although who knows what a car like this might do to me ;)

Howard - Had them ready to quote me the other day but forgot. Cheers for the reminder.

Spunj - Looking at the tegiwa brake stopper, and probably a rear strut brace. Will also get the car over to ArTech for an ECU replacement and re-map/tune after the brething mods are complete..... when I buy one that is :D

ci - Sky were the first company I tried and said it was over £1k and closer to £1.2k with the mods. They kept asking who gave me these good quotes and how the hell were they so low, which is strange considering what some of the younger 24/25 drivers have got from Sky who post on itr-dc2. Will contact them again to try :D

Is it worth going back to Flux and Sky then having a good haggle ?

Just to add, I just rang HIC up to declare my brakes in fact, and that's another modification covered with only a small admin fee, as at the same time I (drastically) increased the value of the S/C conversion up from what they had noted down

Excellent company :)

Christ, totally missed the fact that your Mx is literally a hairblower ;):D

Will call them up on Monday.

:D
I'm considering doing an agreed valuation with them too for the sake of £12, as I'm sure the market value for a 1990 MX5 is about £34.29

Not bad price at all, I know that my Sunny isn't worth more than a pack of fags. But it means the world to me :D

Agreed valuation sounds like a plan!

I am with Chris Knott this year, good for my ST and its accompanying mods.

Rang them up and all went well until he realised I was 24.5 and they only do over 25s :(

Must have changed their policies as I had one last year when I was 24 no problem.

I'm with Quinn Direct, they only charge extra for performance mods.

For example, adding Coilovers, strut braces, Air filter, Exhaust, Collins Powerchip and Bigger brakes only cost me an extra £350.

Not bad IMO

Lol I wouldn't (/haven't) have paid for any of that with HIC :p

Quinn worked out the cheapest for me though :)

You dont want to know how much extra they wanted for a performance modified Focus RS
