Spec me my first car

very true,

young cousin insured one of our ex taxi Vectra cdti 150s for less than the cost of a 1.4 206

think outside the box and reap the joys of having plenty poke :)
might be worth looking at a classic policy/classic car granted you wont build up a no claims bonus but it will be a lot cheaper not to mention get you into some proper cars.

if you want to insure something stupid traders policy is the way to go. mates brother insured a 300+ bhp Scooby at 18 by going down the traders route, good thing about a traders policy you can pretty much drive any old car you can lay your hands on with a simple text of the reg no to your insurance co

A few years ago this was the case, now most trade policies specifically exclude scoobs/evo's and other high performance jap stuff

Pretty much the only thing in this post thats true is the classic thing. The rest is rubbish and frankly I wish people wouldn't keep spreading insurance myths. You cant have a traders policy for a Scooby at 18 even if you actually are a trader let alone if you are not.

Here is a post I made last month on this subject:

I'm really, really bored of seeing the same 'Why no try something unusual like a turbonutterbargelol because nobody who is 18 crashes those and it'll be cheaper to insure than an 800cc Deawoo' line trotted out.

So, I decided it was time for Bob Test, 18 years old, to get some quotes on his first car. Bob is a Sales Assistant living in a medium sized city on the South Coast. He has had his license for less than a year and has no NCB. A typical first time buyer.

Bob has gone to one of the leading insurers for reasonable quotes, Admiral. Here are his quotes:

All cars are 2003 models valued at £3k.

Ford Fiesta 1.4 LX: £2375
Saab 9-5 2.3 TURBO: £5350
Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec: £2579
Ford Mondeo 2.0 Zetec: £3646
Citroen C2 1.1: £1918

And the most old man car I could think of - the car that no 18 year old ever drives let alone crashes - a Rover 75 diesel Classic ESTATE.... £3359

And the most popular 18 year old car ever, surely every one of these ends up in a hedge... the Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 SXi 16v... £2218

As we can see, the bigger the car gets, the more its insurance costs. The smaller the car gets, the less its insurance gets, regardles of the anecdotes often bandied around on here about buying something big that 'isnt popular with 18 year olds'. The very cars that are popular with 18 year olds - small hatchbacks - are funnily enough the cheapest to insure.

There will be the odd exception to the rule every so often which leads to these stories but these are rare.

Generally the bigger and more powerful the car the more expensive it is to insure. It really is that simple.

Want cheap insurance? Buy a small engined hatchback

No, you won't.

I can get insured on a focus cheaper than a same age/engine sized fiesta, has been the same since I started driving. In my opinion, a focus is bigger than a fiesta. i'm simply speaking from personal experience.

EDIT: Just to add, a few strange things with my recent renewal. I put my annual mileage up and my quote got cheaper, I put the value of my car up and my quote again got cheaper.

The obvious one that often gets missed is job description, I saved over £300 on my renewal in 2011 by changing it. I previously had Warehouseman as they didn't have Team Leader as a job option. I changed it to Supervisor and saved just over £300. I phone my insurer to double check and they were ok with this as I argued the point i'm in charge of, ergo supervising, between 15 and 40 people a day.

Are you a 17 year old new driver? With which insurance company is this? Besides these are two rather similar cars and nothing like the daft 150bhp Vectra for less than a Fiesta thing above.

You all eager beavers today with law

Fox those insurance quotes seem pretty high, none of my mates or myself paid anywhere near those prices.

The bigger the car gets the more expensive it gets is also partially incorrect. E.g Insurance on a 2.0 LR Defender at the time would have been cheaper then the 1.2 Clio. But this is all dependent on where you live of course.

You all eager beavers today with law and ****, what people say and what people do are different, I know you are all law abiding citizens on paper but jump into reality and many are doing what they want, so don't be so hypocritical

I'm not sure who's being hypocritical. We've explained to the OP the legal position with falsely informing the insurance company to reduce the premium. If they want to do that and they get away with it then good for them but they've been given the facts to make up their own mind.

One issue is that if you are 'fronting' and you have an accident and your insurers find out, they can void your policy and then you get done for driving uninsured.

Finally someone agrees with me.

I don't know if it would be different if I phoned them up, but I tried using the following companies/brokers: Adrian flux, swinton, admiral, elephant, LV, directline, aviva. Also used compare the market.

In fact someone try and recommend me a car that will be cheaper to insure, I will run it through and report back.

Nah, 33 years old :D Insured with a generic insurer who's name escapes me at the moment through swinton..

I know it's a fluke, just can't find a reasonable reason for a focus to be cheaper than a fiesta.
