Hello all!

I've been lurking for about a month and used quite a lot of helpful tips and advice about upgrading rigs. Now I'm wondering if my planned upgrades over the course of a few months will be ok.

My current rig specs are:

ASUS SKT-775 P5E3 WS PRO S/L 1333FSB
Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 (2 x 3.16 GHz) 1333FSB - 6 MB (o/c'ed to 4.02 GHz)
Noctua NH-D14 CPU Fan
ASUS 1GB RADEON HD 3870X2 PCI-E 2.0
OCZ DDR3 1333MHz Gold 2x2GB (4GB)
500 GB SATA HDD UDMA 300 7200 16MB
ThermalTake W0106RB 700W TOUGHPOWER CABLE MANAGEMENT BLK RET
ANTEC MIDI CASE P182
Creative Audigy SE 7.1
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-BIT

Resolution 1680x1050 (22")

What I am planning on upgrading to is:

ASUS SKT-775 P5E3 WS PRO S/L 1333FSB
Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 (2 x 3.16 GHz) 1333FSB - 6 MB (o/c'ed to 4.02 GHz)
Noctua NH-D14 CPU Fan
MSI ATI Radeon HD 6950 Twin FrozR II 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express
OCZ DDR3 1333MHz Gold 4x2GB (8GB)
Samsung F3 HD103SJ 1TB internal Hard Drive SATAII 32MB Cache 7200RPM
500 GB SATA HDD UDMA 300 7200 16MB
ThermalTake W0106RB 700W TOUGHPOWER CABLE MANAGEMENT BLK RET
ANTEC MIDI CASE P182
Creative Audigy SE 7.1
Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64-BIT

Resolution upgrade to 1920x1080 (24") + extend view to another 1920x1080 (32")

Now this is the initial upgrade this year and another later on (autumn time) I'm planning on perhaps another monitor or two, increased PSU and another 6950 in crossfire. Probably another 1tb in RAID. Don't need storage (I have externals)

I also do the occasional video editing (reason as to why I'm using up all RAM slots) but this will be ultimately a workstation and gaming machine.

So, are there any glaring problems I'll be facing?

Maybe getting a quad core cpu would help you with video rendering.

Nah, E8400 is on par with a Q6XXX and even Q9XXX series tbh.

I would sty clear of OCZ ram - they're pulling out of that sector and they have crap reviews and millions of complaints.

Thanks guys. :)

I only do light video editing anyway so won't really need Quad. Besides; I love my o/ced E8500 too much :D

However, I am building a rig for my brother and he'll be doing heavy video editing. And he's on a budget. I don't know if I should go for AMD or Intel. But that's going to be another thread.

I would love to get me 8gb worth of Corsairs but alas, I had original OCZ in the rig at first and only have to pay for another 4gb versus paying for 8gb of Corsair. Was tempted to do 6gb Corsair...

I'm just glad that my mobo and PSU seems compatible enough for my upgrade.

Scared about how this will cope with cross-firing later down the line however. :(

Sell current crappy ram, but 2x 4GB of Corsair XMS3

Heh. Possibly but will I notice that big a difference? I have to say that my current OCZs have been alright these past few year...

No.

Its just that OCZ are pulling out of RAM sector - may affect warranties, and a lot of their ram has been known to have issues.
