Right I haven't got a huge budget, say £400 absolute tops, but I'd rather spend much less. For that I want 2 speakers, an amp and a bluray player. I'll be connecting this via HDMI(?) to my LG 50" screen. Is this possible? It has been a LONG time since I've looked at anything separates related, so I'm well out of the scene.

Cheers - so that's £350 plus a bluray. Takes me well into the £400 territory. I ideally wanted to spend less but if you're saying that is likely to really improve my experience, then I shall have to invest.

Your scraping the bottom of the barrel of separates here. I'm not bragging, but my receiver cost more than your total budget. And its only really a mid range one. I could quite happily spend double that on a good receiver alone.

If budget is this much of a concern, and your not really much of a Hi Fi geek why not just get a good quality all in one system instead ?

£280 including DVD player

If buying an all in one is a no-no. Then you're going to have to build up your system slowly.

Maybe buy the bluray player first, then buy a good receiver and some cheap 2nd hand 2.1 speakers.

Then swap the speakers for better 5.1 ones at a later date ?

Plenty of bluray players for 50-60 (Phillips, Panasonic etc) on the RS website; not sure if they're good though.

It'd be worth it in the long run IMO rather than a comrpomised amp/bdplayer in one.

I'm not a hifi audiophile, but I do appreciate good quality sound when watching movies. I had a dvd all in one setup until recently but sold that because I want to go bluray. So I don't really mind separates or another all in one system. I just presumed I could get better quality with my budget with separates. I will keep looking.

Sony BDPS 380 - £96
Sony STRDH 810 - £180

That leaves you over £120 for some speakers that you like.

It's what i have and is a great move into separates in my opinion

The Onkyo + a separate BD player is a far better option though, the all-in-ones are usually very lacking in terms of features, connectivity and build quality.

Get the Onkyo system.

At least then you have a ton load of inputs for various other devices which you won't have with an all in one system.

At that price, I would get a stereo Amp (Denon PMA510AE or Marantz PM5004), not a receiver, a pair of decent fronts/bookshelfs (Mission MX1's) and a blu-ray player of your choice.

An all in one system will not be as good.
