http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17905631

i want to try and use my GFX cards at least , im not botherd about the ram , or pcu etc as it will be in the bundle

The problem is that the system you have there is great, and I wouldn't change much of it myself.

It isn't a processor problem, or else there would be no startup at all. Sounds to me like a power supply or motherboard problem...

You'll need to determine what you need first, and what is/isn't damaged. Then we can obviously check what you need to buy to replace.

I've been doing slow small upgrades to my machine, and one of mine was the Case/PSU, I went for the Sonata III, and love it. Best case I've ever had. Also looking at an upgrade to a phenom, mobo and ram for about your budget. Amazing the price of ram, no idea which is best, would probably just pick a brand name.

Just looking for

Processor / Motherboard (Asus) / Ram upgrade.

And which i can use my Crossfire GFX cards

Yeah, you won't really find any Socket 939 processors to upgrade to, as it's practically obsolete now..Hence why I haven't upgraded, cause say for your current processor, you'll pay twice as much as a current 775 processor.

That's why AM2 processors are cheaper than 939 anyway, as they don't make 939 cpu's anymore as far as I know.

Whats happened to your current system then? Suddenly flakey and not working?

If your upgrading, everyone will tell you to goto Intel to be honest, as they are better money for performance wise in 'most' aspects :)

I presume your Cards are PCI-e as well?

for £300 why not get

wolfdale 8500 @ £130
asus maximus extreme @£140 if you want x38 for full on crossfire
asus p5q @£82 if you want P45 and ok crossfire

then get something like a geil black dragon 2X2GB kit @ £50

sell your old ram cpu and mainboard and put the cas towards better gear

with your current cards i would reccomend going p45 and selling both of your cards to get a 4850/4870

P5Q Pro so you can use Crossfire, Q6600 (the only worth upgrade, going with another dual core wouldn't be worth it otherwise), and 2x2GB GeIL Black Dragon PC6400.

Going with an Xx8 board will be expensive, and you aren't going to say any major performance increase. Graphics cards don't take up a whole 8x PCI-E slot, let alone a 16x.

Mind you, I would recommend selling your cards as rjkoneill said. You can probably get £55 for them each, and get one 4850 which will be faster.

As far as i can tell my current system either the motherboard or processor has gone , all i get is power to the fans and no POST! i do have a seprate topic on this.
Why Intel? i've almost always had AMD

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 2.40GHz Guaranteed to run at 3.30GHZ (1466FSB) - Retail < if i get this is it worth upgrading the heatsink??

^^ is this the best setup atm??

Unless your doing video encoding you dont need a quad.

I would get

fl9f91.jpg

Or get an Asus P5E Mobo as the X38 will be better for your crossfire and change the CPU to E8400 coming in at just under £320 with free shipping.

+ As i will be on XP i wont be using 4GIG of ram either, unless i save it! which might be pointless this moment in time.

Imo , want the best upgrade i can get for £350 (max) :P So i might as well go quad as its uber anyway no? more power etc.

also im liking the look of the Asus maximus extreme

so much to choose from , dunno where to go :/
