im currently running:

Opteron 170 (@ 2.2Ghz)
DFI LanParty UT NF4 Ultra-D
ATI Radeon X1900XTX
2GB Mushkin Extreme RAM (@ Stock)

the system was origionally running well @ 2.6Ghz with the ram at 520DDR but after running like this for over a year its taken its toll and due to lots of non-boots and errors im now running at just above stock

im looking for a new CPU and Motherboard and also wondered whether i should upgrade my GPU or wait for ATI's new cards, im not really bothered whether its Intel or AMD and again have no preference on Mobos as long as its clocker friendly, the GFX card (if i get one) would have to a serious improvement over the X1900XTX for me to consider upgrading it.

my budget for the CPU/Mobo is about £300, no budget on GFX card.

TIA

For £300 you could get a pretty good mobo/CPU combo. If you want to save money get the E6420, it should clock as well as the E6600 but is cheaper.

For the motherboard, if you need SLi then go for an Asus P5N-E. If you don't need SLi go for a Gigabyte DS3P or Asus P5B. The combination will cost you between £200 and £300, depending on what you go for.

You'll need new Ram to go with a new motherboard/CPU, some decent PC6400 DDR2 like the Geil PC6400 C4 would be a good choice for around £110.

Graphics card, the next step up is an 8800GTS which starts at around £210 for the 320mb version or around £260 for the 640mb version, above that is the 8800GTX but that doesn't come in much shy of £400. :)
