I play COD4 too, it rocks.. Anyhow, I recommend to stick with AM3 for the upgrade to save a new mobo etc.

OcUK GeForce GTX 470 1280MB - £140
AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 975 -£125 @ 3.9 - 4.5 Ghz-ish
Thermalright Silver Arrow CPU Cooler -£51
OCZ Z-Series 850W '80 Plus Gold' -£93
Total = £409

Graphics card is a large upgrade, so is the CPU and with the cooler and an OC would be a great gamer.

I picked a bigger and more efficient PSU, the less % of a total PSU you use the more efficiency and it's 80+ Gold. Good life span, good for electricity bill, good for future upgrades.

Right PSU, wrong reasons :)

Good reference about PSU's and power draw/efficiency

Saying that I'd recommend that PSU for other reasons... Mostly because your current one is rubbish, and the last thing you want to go pop is a dodgy PSU - you'll be looking at other components going as well. The 850W will give you more than enough headroom to SLI in future as well if you wanted to, and is an absolute steal for what it is at that price range.

CPU cooler you definitely don't need something as mahoosive as the Silver Arrow. Get a Gelid Tranquillo.

The rest of it I can't really think right now, I'm sure RJC'll come along soon :)

I am not clued up on the AMD side of things but I know that the i5 2500k is the chip of choice when it comes to gaming just now.

Its not a complete new system but it is the base for a gaming machine :)

You could put this in your case just now with your 8400GS while you save for a 6950 or a 670 OR you could even wait for the next gen of cards which is rumored to be coming in the next few weeks/months.

But I am sure someone who knows more about AMD will come along soon and spec you a similar system based on some of the components you already have.

For CPU just get a Phenom II 955. The 965/970/975/980 aren't worth the extra as you can overclock the 955 to match them, and while a 2500K would me much faster it would leave no room for a gpu upgrade which is what you really need for gaming (you're athlon x4 shouldn't be too slow for the time being if you don't get enough money to upgrade both).

He'd need a new Mobo then. It'll probably eat up half is budget for that and the 2500k alone. It'd be wiser to invest more into a GPU and better AMD CPU.

an 8400GT is no where near enough for any sort of gaming. a friend of mine had one and it could barely play anything. he was resorting to absolute lowest graphics and windowed mode in dirt 2 to get any sort of playable framerates, and this was with a stronger processor.

before i make you a recommendation can you tell me if your HDD and DVD drives are IDE or SATA?

also, quick question, how have you got 7GB RAM? (i assume 3x2GB and 1x1GB)
