Hi, I am currently on Tiscalli broadband. combo of telephone and adsl router, I am using wireless connection (router downstairs and my PC on second floor), both router and usb receiver are "N". I have upgraded router from one which tiscalli gave me, but still not happy with speed!

Maximum downloading speed I have noticed 1.1mb, but it would reach this speed very rarely. It even dropped lately to 50kbs/100kbs lately.

As to web browsing it is pain too, don't know what's the reasons but last 2 days websites would load even slower!

I have changed couple wi-fi adapters (edimax/netgear) and also router.

Most of the time only mine PC is switched on (so no other connections which can cause internet to be slow).

Now I am thinking maybe it is time to switch provider... any recommendations of faster internet with faster downloading speed?

Thanks

Be is a good one for ADSL, do you know what exchange you're connected to? How much would you like to pay per month?

Is there big difference in ADSL and cable internet?

I believe Payment is ~£24 for internet and about £11 for a phone.

So something near that +/-... just want to see all best options.

I was going to say Be as well.

I'v been with them for a few years. Ok, you could maybe get faster speeds with Virgin (cable only), but with BE, there is absolutly no traffic shapping, data limits etc...

Your speed will be the max your copper wire can support, and they dont care how much you download as long as its all legal! ;)

They have top support, will pander to every whim that you have etc....

I have nothing bad to say about them at all.

Might aswell get O2 and not BE, as they are cheaper and same product. I had them for a year or so perfect. Then I found a better price with Sky so I'm switching to them now. I expect same 10-12 down / 1 up. I think it's mostly to do with my area being somewhat residential and quiet.

O2 = Traffic shaping/throttling. None of that with Be*.

@angela - which exchange are you on? http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search

would be worth posting up your router stats.

also, do you know what speed you get plugged direct into the router rather than going wireless.

what signal strength do you get in the location your using ?

Excuse my ignorance (can't find a suitable answer on google) but what does that mean? I get full torrent speeds at all times on the LLU package.

Also do Sky do this? I'm worried now I'll get rubbish speeds when I'm switched on the 11th. Might even cancel it!

Are you on O2 LLU at the moment, if so, you're probably on a legacy package without traffic shaping. All the new O2 LLU packages shape bittorrent and usenet.

Sky Unlimited = No shaping.
Sky Broadband Connect = Shaped to hell.

You can use this site to check what exchange you're with: http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search

You need to answer these questions before thinking about changing ISP.

Test your speeds with the router plugged in the master test socket and your PC wired to the router.
