Building a pc for a friend, and seeing as you guys did such a good job helping me spec mine way back when, I thought id ask y'all again!

He wants a rig primarily for gaming. Main things he has specified he would like are:

A case which is easy to manage (good cabling system, airflow etc) and has a window

An SSD

An i5 cpu (sandy) (if budget will allow)

He doesn't need windows or a monitor.

Here's what ive been looking at, but struggling to keep the budget!

You could reduce the GPU to a 6850 and put a Ivy i5 with a after market cooler in. But this will play games better and gives you a good upgrade path to Ivy i5 and SSD in the future. You could upgrade the mobo if you want to crossfire / SLI?

If you have any questions we are here to help :)

PS. The Bitfenix case I picked doesnt include fans. But they are fairly cheap and you can buy them here.

The Z9 case is what he is looking for, best bang for buck case certainly in my eyes.

I used a much better 7850 with a longer warranty and it's clocked faster out of the box for not much more. He really really REALLY will want a GPU with 2GB of VRAM. PSU is modular which is very handy when building in midi towers and has plenty of power for single GPU setups.

The HDD is B grade but this was to claw back some cash to get the price closer to the budget. Hope this helps

Nice spec by Hono :)
Shame the Z9 is out of stock really, you can either choose a different case or wait for it to come back into stock. It definetley is a very good case

Nice, cheers for the spec Hono. Do you think the i3 would be enough horsepower though? obviously the upgrade potential for an i5 is there, but what about the i3 to keep him going in the meantime?

You're welcome bud. i3 is a good bang for buck CPU. You could even consider the G840 which is much cheaper. It doesn't have quicksync support but the GPU can assist with video encoding, although quick sync is better at it. For gaming it stays close to the i3, so it's not a major compromise.

As the G840 is nearly half the price, it's easier to "justify" writing it off much later to drop in an i5K, even if it is secondhand. For gaming he wants to concentrate on the GPU really. The 7850 is ideal with it's 2GB of VRAM, they overclock well and use less power than the 6950 which is priced very close.
