Hello all,

A friend of mine needs a PC for their computer degree. They'll be using it for compiling code and building games in Java. What spec would you recommend? I'm assuming the GPU wouldn't need to be too advanced, probably no more than 1080p. Are there any CPUs recommended for compiling?

Cheers,

Jed

What kind of games will they be playing?

Java games are usually pretty simple.

Do they have a budget?

Compiling, Phoronix include compiling in their reviews (though it is Linux-based) as does TPU *, but I'd imagine the code someone is doing in a BSc degree is unlikely to be super complex, so I wouldn't recommend e.g. a 13900K, unless they have a big budget and nothing better to spend it on. The CPU depends on the compiler and how well it is multi-threaded, but generally single-thread performance is more important, unless you're working on larger, more professional projects, in which case any of the best productivity CPUs right now are suitable, like 13600K/13700K, 7900 non-X (review).

If they have a lower-end budget, then I'd consider a 12400, as the integrated GPU will likely be enough for simple games.
