Spec me please (Ordered Today)

Hi People,

I am in dire need of a new PC my spec at the moment is a P3 933Mhz :D , ouch i hear you say!!

It can just about play Counter strike source! (very badly 15fps) I also use several music progs e.g Reason/ fruity loops etc and the machine can just not hack it
After a lot of head scratching searching for this and that, this is what I have come up with.

I already have 2 dvd drives LG 4167b and LG HSA22 so I dont need any more of those.

Posts on other forums say dont bother with the WD raptor boot/gaming hdd, because the benefits are so small. What do you guys think?

Can i fit everything easily in that case as I have read about room in tight cases and the Arctic Cooling Freezer being a problem.?

Also need a sound card any suggestions?

Lian-Li PC-7 PLUS Aluminium Midi-Tower Case - Black £48.99

I like the look of this but like the silver better

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC) £137.99

I looked at this but read some bad things about it, is this not the case any more?

I think I will stick with the GTX :D

For the price of that Corsair dominator you can also consider the Crucial Anniversery, although only rated PC5400 it ocs like mad, in fact there is another thread in the memory section about this kit:

I have never overclocked anything before!! But I am willing to try, is this the Crucial memory you mentioned?

Crucial 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-5300C3 667MHz Tenth Anniversary Dual Channel Kit (TY2KIT12864AA663)

Also I have a 17" TFT at the mo, would it be wise to upgrade to a 22"? If so what is this one like?

If you're gonna be doing music on it, I reccomend a sound card designed for music rather than gaming. Something with ASIO drivers would be preferable. Have a look at models by M-Audio, Tascam, Marian, Echo, RME & Terratec. PCI isn't the only option either. There are some pretty decent usb and firewire solutions out there, some with control surface features. You can pick up a 2nd hand Tascam US-428 pretty cheap nowadays. Something like that would prove pretty useful should you ever want to experiment with recording audio.
Also, throw as much ram at it as you can afford.

Yea I think your right. I have an M-audio Oxygen 8 midi keyboard so I may stick with M-audio.

I checked out the Tascam US-428 it was a grand!! Cant go that silly yet!!

How much RAM then 4Gb?

Thanks for your comments

GA-965P-DS3 HELP

Ok guys I have read the step by step guide in the thread below and I am a little confused about the fixing holes on the mobo.

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17530296

There seem to be 7 fixing holes with (that I believe are) earthing rings and 7 fixing hole without. Do i use all 14 or just the 7 with earth rings as advised in the thread below.

Also does the fixing pillar threaded end go through the mobo and into the case (pillars provided by the Lian-Li case) I just cant see how the board will be insulated.

p.s I havent done this for years!!

TIA

hmmm my PC-7 is still sitting in the corner of my room un-opened. I shall install it tonight and let you know my findings.

I worked it out in the end, I was not reading the thread correctly. Screw the pillars into the case 6 or 7 i think the other holes I was on about were for the cooler. Makes sense really or else the mobo would be put into orbit.

Just booted it up first time!! Installing XP now. My mrs ****** herself at the size of the monitor (so did I) compared to the 17" one it replaced.

Just read the whole thread, let us know how it turns out! And get some pics too :D

Its gone really well (only taken 8 hours lol). This 24" monitor takes a bit of getting used to though.

I will post some pics tomorrow when I've tidied up a bit

Need a good game to try out now I have CSS (dl now its taking forever) any other suggestions people?

LOL :D

CSS is a piece of cake for your spec; to really show off your new rig run demanding games like Oblivion, Fear, NFS Carbon, Company of Heroes, Medieival Total War 2 & Dark Messiah (both demo available from steam)...etc at max resolution with max AA & AF.

Must go to bed now just finished wiring everthing in the new PC-7!! Forgot how difficult it is!!

Tried out Medieval Total war demo and it blew me away  everything maxed out, waiting for dark messiah and FEAR to trundle down my connection and will give those a go too.

How do I post pics on here I dont seem to have any attachment function?
