Terribly sorry for this, considering there is a sticky specifically for speccing... but it hasnt been updated in a while (as far as I can tell from the actual system posts) and I want to make sure I get the most of my money!

I would like to spend £600-£700 on a machine, primarily used for gaming. I have all periphirals so only need the guts and a case. Mainly I play WoW so anything that would run that comfortably would be fine. Anything above that, that might let me run the latest games would be a bonus, bearing in mind I only run at 1280x1024.

Will be running XP provided it supports all the new technology... extra cores etc

Appreciate it, anyone who takes the time to reply!

Edit: Have a spare DVD Drive, and have a PS3 for Blu-Ray stuff. Is a new one necessary?

I would go for this:

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail
Asus P5Q Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX (2x2GB)
Asus ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB "Dark Knight" GDDR5 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail
Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (WD6401AALS)
Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-620HXUK)
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775)
Antec 300 Three Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case

£703.03 + shipping

If you are going to run XP as you say, only around 3gb of RAM will be recognised by windows. To get the full 4gb you will need a 64 bit OS. Also the case only comes with top and rear fan , there is still space to add 3 more 120mm fans.

Is the spare dvd drive you have sata or IDE? If it's the 2nd then I'd stick a cheap sata DVD-RW drive in with that spec.

I've given 4gb of ram, windows XP won't show all of this though as it's only vista 64bit that can fully use it, but for the price you might aswell go for 4gb. You'll probably find it'll show 3.25gb or something similar in XP. It's also good idea to go with 4gb if you plan to upgrade to vista in the future.

Is 1280*1024 the max resolution your monitor can provide? The 4850 should handle pretty much everything with no problems at that resolution. I've got one with a 22" monitor and handles any game I've thrown at it. Anything more than this card would be wasted.

A bigger monitor would be a plus, make the most of this system. 1680*1050 would be the ideal resolution for this setup. You could maybe drop the E8400 CPU for the E7300, save some money on that and put it towards a new monitor.

giving you about £140 to spend on a monitor. Should get you a decent 22" one, guessing by your resolution your currently using a 17" monitor, going from that to a 22" would be a worthwhile upgrade.
