Friend wants me to build him a PC for gaming which I am happy to do. Budget is around £1,200 but less would be good. The machine will be driving a 1080 resolution screen, which it will need to attach to via a Denon amp using HDMI, ideally also taking the sound through this too if possible feeding it as 5.1 surround?? I want a mini tower case and ideally would like to be able to run BF3 though it will mainly be used for running racing sims. The machine will be stored in an AV room but not rack mounted though as stated a smaller mini tower case is preferred.

Thinking i5 processor and 4GB-6GB memory and a single graphics card solution is preferred. Will also need to spec a wireless keyboard and mouse and welcome any thoughts you good people of overclocking goodness might have to offer....and sorry for yet another spec me thread :D

That spec is a decent spec. If you have any hard drives you can recycle (or your friend does) it may help the situation.

The RAM is good as its low-profile and will let the cooler sit over it with ease.

My only alternitive suggestion is get a 750W-850W PSU so that your friend can go SLI when he feel the machine is going out of date. Im sure a 64GB SSD will only be needed too.

I can give him a couple of Hard drives, I have loads of the things for mass storage but I think an SSD for OS and some games makes sense. I have 2 SSD's in my gaming PC, 1 for OS and normal apps, the other for Games to ensure I get nice quick load times.

Same thing, just swapped the board and PSU, removed the HDD.

Couple of questions for clarity...

1) I assume the motherboard sound can be pumped via the HDMI on the GPU into the aforementioned Denon amp?
2) I also assume that the motherboard sound negates the need for a sound card these days?

Some more questions....

1) We plan to plug into this a G27 wheel and pedals, which will be linked back to the PC via a long USB extension (15-20 feet). Is this length of USB cable likely to be an issue, I'm not sure if their is a length restriction on USB. Currently XBox 360 works via this cable no problem so assuming all good?

2) The GPU will actually be powering a DLP projector which is connected to the amp, which is likely to be upgraded to a 3D projector at Christmas I am told. Is this likely to need anything over and above a normal LCD monitor? Currently PS3 and XBox work fine through said projector so I am simply assuming the PC will be the same

Once again thanks. I now have it up to 1,390.80 with some additional peripherals to complete. The case looks a bit tacky so looking at other options there. I have an 850D so been a bit spoilt, what if we upped the case budget to say £100, what would you chose then may I ask?
