im looking for a router/modem/firewall that has timed access restrictions for the other pcs in the house.
im looking to restrict internet time that my children are allowed.

ive tried the linksys wag54gs as this had a good access restriction section, however after i set it up, it stopped their access permanenty rather than just at the stated times.
i contacted linksys about this and after going through the hoops of changing the firmware and checking i had config'd it correctly, they confirmed that it was more than likely faulty.
plus their indian support leaves a lot to be desired.

i was thinking of a draytek, however im not sure if these have that type of restriction management.

if theres any other routers that do this please let me know.

cheers

could you not do this with local policies on the machine instead?

could be easier that way?

for the youngest child , yes.
however, the eldest is a student ( an IT student ) ..so he will know how to get around that.
for example, he knows how to spoof his mac/ip ...took a while to sort that little problem out.

i know what some would say, make them or remove their pcs, but to be honest that causes too many arguements in the house and with me being out a lot of the time, i really need a central solution that takes care of it itself...after all, you cant cause an arguement with a router, it doesnt answer back !

any other suggestions?

thanks

A WRT54GL and your choice of ADSL modem (probably as cheap with a cheap ADSL router than an actual ethernet ADSL modem, but the idea's the same)?

The WRT definitely does time of day filtering, and it works too (though I can't help wondering if the rules you were setting just needed a second rule to remove the restrictions, but ho hum).

Hi Tolien.

regarding the second rule to remove the restriction...perhaps you may be right there, please check my config below, but it worked using these rules for about a week before :

i setup access rule as follows..

1. allow access from 13.00-15.00 mon-fri (2 hours)
2.allow access from 17.00-23.00 mon-fri (6 hours)
3. allow access from 16.00-23.00 sat/sun

i have tried setting these using both ip and mac..same problem.
soon as i delete those rules, and only then..they then have full access.

if i have setup the rules wrong in any way , please advise.

regarding the router , im running a zoom x6 at the mment (my old one) so if the wrt54gl works along side it, ill check it out.

There's nothing looks obviously wrong with those rules - if it's asking for a finish time, it should be killing the rule at that time...I haven't spent (any) time playing with the rules beyond knowing that they exist.
The third party firmware for the WRT probably won't be "corporate" (in the sense of having a staffed helpline or whatever), but you shouldn't have a problem getting help.

It should work fine.
