The AM3 X3 720 CPU is showing great potential in games, similar to the E8400, but is much cheaper. It's also very easy to overclock (just a case of changing the multiplier). The new AM3 CPU's are backwards compatible with the AM2+ mobo's, so you can still use DDR2 ram.

I wouldn't want to run the above spec, or the one you've shown on a 400W PSU, it would seriously be pushing the limits. The 520W coolermaster should handle it a lot easier, plus it's modular aswell.

The below spec is the intel alternative (just a modification of the one you've shown).

You could save a bit of money on this one, drop the CPU to an E7400, that'll save you £50 and still should overclock to similar levels of the E8400.

how would these rigs cope with the more demanding games? also is the AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 920 2.8GHz (Socket AM2+) any good (better than Q6600)

Both rigs would easily play the latest and demanding games and would perform even better once overclocked, something which both the E8400 and 720 do very well.

Generally a faster dual core is better for gaming over a quad, as the games don't tend to use all 4 cores.

The Q6600 is becoming quite an old CPU, still good, but the newer quads from both intel and AMD are much better. The AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 920 is meant to be very good, but the X3 will perform to similar levels in games and should overclock well, especially with it being the black edition, while also being much cheaper.

Been thinking about the replys, i know u dont need quad cores for gaming but I imagine more games will be utilising it soon enough. What do people think of this/is everything compatible. First time building my own rig. Conversley what would you do with 775 quid building a gaming rig.
