I M going to build a rig for my brother who has found a new love or music that's all he is interested in.
I would like itto be as cheap as possible.
He has 5.1 surround sound.
He already has a keyboard, mouse monitor so only a base unit

come up with the following a starting point, said your brother has "found a new love of music" so left the sound card decision to others who might be able to recommend something other than the asus xonar/x-fi if hes into more than just listening to it.

This is kind of vague... If its for a gift you should make sure this is exactly what he needs. This kind of cheap builds are usually expensive to upgrade. Once he has the PC he might as well decide to use it for something else and find that it is not too great.

You could always just buy the sound card and let him decide the rest as he sees fit. It just seems strange to me, pairing high end sound cards with low end motherboards and relatively weak processors. Sorry for being off-topic here.
