I'm looking for a new system to upgrade to ditch my ageing and slowly dying thing in my sig.

I don't really game all that much these days (the last game I bought was Quake4 - haivng kids makes gaming a near impossibility!) and it's been a few years since I did any overclocking. You can see from my sig that my current system is waaay old and I've got no idea what the difference in between the current processors etc etc, so I've no idea where to begin other than my budget.

I want to spend about £450 tops, and I don't need a case, PSU or software.
The only thing I really have my heart set on is getting an SSD so I know that cuts the budget elsewhere, but that's ok since I'm not going to need anything near top end graphics or processor etc.
(want to reuse my Corsair PSU, and already have retail Windows7)

I was thinking about an i5 but that's out of my price range. Is it better to get an i3 or something from AMD? No idea on Phenom or Athlon differences tho. Same for gfx - no idea of the right Ati/Nvidia cards to look at.

I also want something that's going to last me a few years before I need to upgrade again.

Any help appreciated! Thanks!

you aint going to have much left after a decent SSD, their a minimum of £99 for a small but good intel one.

with the money left, the pc bits will be a bit rubbish.

thanks phil but don't game enough to warrant a console.

So if I got an SSD for about 100 that would leave about 350 for a non-gaming focussed system which is really what I'll be getting. A fifty quid graphics card would be about right for a little bit of light gaming surely? Still got to be faster than what I've got now right? That would leave 300 for a cheap cpu, board and memory. Surely that's possible?

Or what about if I changed to say the same budget but excluding the SSD which I could get later?
