What would you lot spend £400 on he said he is not to fussed about games as he likes the facebook games, was thinking core I3/ddr3 setup with maybe a 5570 vid card, or would it be better going the way of a Q8300 /ddr2 with 5770. Or is there an AMD setup that could be considered. I am normally right up on this stuff, but a little out of the loop as all my PCs suit my needs. Have to factor in cheapo case PSU and HD/optical.
I know there are some top speccers here, who are really up on current prices for stuff.

If it's basically a net browsing pc, which by your description is how it sounds, an i3 would be fine and wont require a gpu (i3 has one built in), however if things more demanding than facebook are going to be run this might require a bit of a re-think.

As for PSU go for the 400w corsair, optical get the cheapest sata dvd drive. case xigmatec asgard.

Sorry i can't do a proper spec, i'm at work and can't.

EDIT: would seem CAT is on the case now so expect a gazillion specs

"Primo Oren" AMD Athlon II X2 Dual Core 245 2.90GHz DDR3 System, that way if it goes wrong he can contact OCuk rather than pestering you for help. :p

Given that the 550 only seems to have about a 50% chance of unlocking I would stick with the Athlon. The 555 has a better chance of unlock but still not 100%.

Considering he's not a gamer and Banny hasn't mentioned him doing any other CPU intensive tasks such as encoding/simulations I can't really see the need for the quad core.

Got him the I3 in the end, the cheapest one and stuck it in a SFF case, seeing as the I3 has onchip VGA plus the Gigabyte board has sound, seemed to be the best option.
If he wants he can always add a video card at a later date.
Thanks for all the advice, but I went with Intel in the end purely because it seemed a good choice for his needs.
