Hi guys,

The speakers in the new Doblo van arn't too hot. In the Mondeo I had Infinity 6520cs (possibly 6510cs?) components, cost around £80 are sounded great.

I canno't really see any ideal place to mount tweeters in the van so am looking at coax speakers.

(An option I am yet to look into is door speakers, as there are speaker grills on the door (but no speakers) so I will have to take the panel off and have a look into this further - possibly fit speakers in the doors and the tweeters in the dash?)

Speaker size is 10cm, these are fitted in the dash.

Is there anything decent on the market that fit's the bill? Under £100.

Thanks,

Chris

you could probably get a set of coax infinities well within your range and with a little modding, you should be able to squeeze 13cm ones in there. They will be much better than 10's.

for a little more money, Rainbow make some nice speakers.

Yep, i'd make some MDF spacers and fit some 13cm speakers instead, 10cm speakers are going to sound pants and lack any bass.

I'll pull the dash apart and snap some pic's. I think there will be space to fit 13cm's in though. We shall see :D

Have you changed the head unit first? You'll be surprised at how a decent aftermarket unit can improve the quality of sound coming from the stock speakers. I've never bothered replacing speakers in any of my cars, every time I've replaced the head unit however, there has been a noticeable increase in quality :)

I got some nice Focal 10cm coaxial speakers with adjustable tweeters. They're movable so you can angle the tweeter, pretty neat idea. Not sure about the model but if you wanna pop round I can show you them or you can try them out if you want (they're sat in the garage as I've just took them out of the Elise)

That is a kind offer Steve, how do they sound to you? Does the size limit them do you think?

I have installed a better head unit, my Alpine 9851R.

I am away in London at the moment but when I get back I'll take a look behind the door cards I think...

They're definitely better than standard, but it's hard to tell just how much cos they were in the Elise which isn't exactly the best place for audio. If you wanna pop round sometime and fit one side then you can fade from standard to Focal and see the difference. Obviously being so small you're not gonna get much in the way of bass out of them but you should be able to hear the quality difference.

Bumping this old thread as need to get something better in the van.

There is lots of space around the speakers but behind the mount points so unsure how I could make something up to secure 13cm speakers in there (think they'll fit though!).

Because the speaker mounts behind the screw holes wont larger rigs obstruct the driver of a larger speaker?

You'd have to remove the trim to get to the bare chassis and secure the rings/speakers to that. Looks like you'll run into clearance issues with the spacers, hard to tell.

I would be going the component route if it gets to trim removal time to get a better sound stage.

The trim is what the speakers mount to, nothing metal or else behind it.

I don't think vans know what a sound stage is?!

you could make some mounts which are the same shape as the door trim. Fix those to the trim and cut a hole big enough for 13's. Will take some calculation but shouldn't be too hard.
