Tchaikovsky - 1812 Overture
This is harder than I thought..
Alexandre Desplat - Griet's Theme (Girl with a Pearl Earring) (from Classic FM's At the movies)
In the end, there's a lot of pieces that I like, however much of it is buried on compilations and things like that, some is modern, some much older, its all down to personal taste.
There's no way to choose 5 favourite classical pieces but here's three that I very much like (will add more when less tired!!)
Rachmaninov - Piano Concerto No.3 in D minor Op.30?I. Allegro ma non tanto - Ashkenazy's style suits this piece well.
Arcadi Volodos - Concert Paraphrase on "Turkish March" (W. A. Mozart, Sonata No. 11 in A Major, K. 331 - Finale, Rondo alla turca)
Not strictly classical classical (original Mozart version) but classical nonetheless!! I think this would mean a bit more if you've heard the usual version a few times first.
Massenet - Meditation (Thais) - Nigel Kennedy plays this sublimely
Hopefully with fewer wrong notes than that version
OP: Try Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time, Berg's Violin Concerto, Symphonies of Wind Instruments by Stravinsky, Ionisation by Varese and Schoenberg's second String Quartet for a bit more variation.
