Buy a renault 5 GT Turbo

after looking at a couple of 2l 16v novas/corsas mk2 astra gte's etc i've got my heart set on a rusty little french bucket of crud :)

I know all about french reliability having owned the UK's most unreliable 205 gti( average 5 breakdowns a month )

Budgeting around 1000-1500 quid for a nice 5

any thoughts oh OCUK gurus

and no fox i'm not chopping in the E30 before you suggest a bavarian motor works beast

Well when they were brand spanking new they were only good for around 40k miles, so i would say nowadays they would be one of the biggest bags of *** you could buy.
Having said that when going well they are great little cars.

indeed Fox

although you cant slate my E30 can you?

Totally Standard looking 320SE :)

although there is a bodged supercharger conversion lurking under the bonnet

Good 5 for a grand? No chance.

2 of my mates have very very nice ones but they paid about £6k each for them.

Urm, the turbo'd 1.4 lump? Why they didn't turbo the 1.7 lump I'll never know. I'd say the 205 would be more reliable. :)

lolzer :)

had a couple of 205 gti's and although mint they were complete unreliable sheds,

i'm quite partial to randomly breaking french tat.

at least the 5 is carb fed so a bit less in the way of dodgy french electrics to go wrong

I think its quite clear we should only recommend 'intersting' cars as none of us want to see our favourites brutalised by him in the way of his previous cars :p

You're lucky yer rear beam didn't seize up! ;)

A lot of people overhaul the loom when installing an Mi16, so there are a fewer elecrical "issues" shall we say. Also, you can do away with the injection completly and throw some weber carbs on there, but it all costs £££'s.

If I was forced to spend a grand on something french, would it be worth checking out a clio williams or something without a turbo?

You'll stall at T-junctions a lot.

The idiots that designed it put the hot turbo directly under the carb. Result is; all the fuel in the float chamber vaporises/evaporates, the moment you open the throttle there isn't enough fuel.
