Spec me some good sci fi films.

Only one epic Scifi film - Blade Runner directors cut. Try to watch it last for all others will pale in comparison ..

As mentioned -

Serenity.
Pitch Black.

A lot of good recommendations so far (pleased to see Hardware and plenty of Cronenberg). You might also want to check out:

Strange Days
A Scanner Darkly
Scanners
Altered States
Twelve Monkeys
Tetsuo, the Iron Man

How is Battle Royale sci-fi

It's certainly Science Fiction: It's set in a version of Japanese society which doesn't exist, but might in the future, and is clearly intended to be an Awful Warning (a stock SF trope). Fairly straightforward SF. Next you'll be trying tell me that The Truman Show isn't SF. I'm inclined to agree that it's not Sci-Fi though.

I'm not sure I understand you, are you referring 'Science Fiction' to as SF? If so then what do you suppose Sci-fi stands for?

science-fiction is a very broad term in the first place there any many sub-genres of science fiction one could argue battle-royal fits under http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_fiction#Alternate_history

although i'd say they would be wrong :p its understandable that some people can be confused as to what is sci-fi and what is not

I get that. For example I would say that both Vanilla Sky and Alien are both Sci-Fi, although they are at very different ends of the spectrum.

I was just questioning Meridian's definition that Science Fiction (SF) is different to 'Sci-Fi'?

I think you've come across one of Meridian's pet bugbears, my understanding here is that he uses SF to cover any generic Science Fiction i.e. anything that could be set in an alternate reality/vision of the future etc and Sci-Fi to distinguish the more commonly held view of it as based in space/with technology that science does not have currently. I seem to remember a discourse on why no true Science Fiction fan would call it Sci-Fi as well. I'm sure he'll be along to clarify though.
