Spec me some good sci fi films.

Mr. Nobody, Book of Eli and Dune. I have left out all the other movies that have already been mentioned as well as early movies, as im not sure if thats what you want.

I think you've come across one of Meridian's pet bugbears, my understanding here is that he uses SF to cover any generic Science Fiction i.e. anything that could be set in an alternate reality/vision of the future etc and Sci-Fi to distinguish the more commonly held view of it as based in space/with technology that science does not have currently. I seem to remember a discourse on why no true Science Fiction fan would call it Sci-Fi as well. I'm sure he'll be along to clarify though.

Close enough. SF is the form of fiction which started a long time ago (arguments rage from The Epic of Gilgamesh through Gulliver's Travels to Frankenstein as to when it started). It's a very wide field. Sci-Fi is is term used be people who know nothing about Science Fiction to describe things like Star Wars and Doctor Who. It is a truth universally acknowledged amongst people that know Science Fiction that as soon as some one uses the term Sci-Fi in describing SF then they have admitted their ignorance. Following this up by admitting to being (say) a Star Trek fan is unnecessary confirmation of this. At best Sci-Fi is a small sub-set of SF (the proper abbreviation of Science Fiction). The good news for those of us who like SF is that we know any opinions put forward by someone using the term Sci-Fi in any sense except the ironic (and I wish I could find Harlan Ellison's classic comment about "skiffy" as he calls it) are close to worthless, as they clearly know nothing about Science Fiction. They may know something about Sci-Fi, but that's the same as saying that reading Dan Brown and Clive Cussler means that you are an expert in English Lit. Oh, and Batman is not even Sci-Fi, never mind Science Fiction. It's fantasy.

I assume that around now that I will be accused of being a snob. Given that the term is usually used to describe people who can tell good from bad by people who can't, I'm happy to go with it. Now, back to reading Justina Robson... An internet beer (and an an honourable exception to the above) for anyone who knows who she is without looking it up.

Thank you Barry Norman

In other words, it's a broad term used for films that contain fiction and science. Makes me laugh that anyone would pick it out as... oh wait.. this is the internet.

Actually a snob isn't someone who can usually tell good from bad, a snob is generally used to describe someone who dismisses many options as not good enough without ever having tried whatever it is. A snob is usually an ignorant moron who has a set way of thinking based on predefined illogical idea's rather than being based in reality.

IE A snob may turn their nose up at a pizza because they deem eating a slice with your hands as lower class and assume pizza also tastes like dirt rather than from having eaten pizza and disliked it, which you really can't as its awesome.

People who spend THAT much time debating over what is or isn't science fiction and criticising others catagorisation of such films in this case, are snobs.

The only defination you know, is one of that agreed upon by several people who wish to define it further, that doesn't actually make your classification better or more accurate, you've just decided to catagorise your films further than others can be bothered, that doesn't make you better, more accurate, or right.

Sci fi for those that can't be bothered talking about it on forums for hours is pretty simple, its a quicker way of typing or saying Science Fiction........ frankly anyone who decides otherwise is a jobsworth, nothing more or less.

Nice one Tefal! Subscribed.

This was a lot better than I thought it might be. I'd certainly recommend it if you enjoy a bit of gritty space stuff.

Exactly what I thought. It's one of those movies you watch and mid film you think "I really really REAAALLY miss films like this... it's been a long time". It's a good old space film with such a well designed vessel, just looks so futuristic and cool.

Highly recommended.

Why hasn't Tefal commented on any of the movies posted. Surely you've seen some of these mate? Or are you playing the I-wont-say-a-word-cos-the-thread-is-alive-and-any-word-I-utter-may-stop-the-flow trick.
