and most of those already mentioned except Serenity that was pure ****, don't get me wrong firefly was an Ok series not brilliant or complete **** but Ok... then Serenity came along and destroyed it IMHO.

This has been mentioned once in this thread, but its such a good SF film its worth a mention again

In the true vein of SF - pure story telling at its best, not a single special effect.

If you've not seen it, seek it out

Star Wars? Seems to have been missed!

Forbidden Planet. Okay, it's rather retro, but I love it.

War of the Worlds. Another retro job. Though I suppose you could watch the Spielberg version instead...

Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The last few minutes are full of everything I despise about Spielberg films, but everything else is superb.

Battlefield Earth. It has to be seen.

You can then really appreciate good sci-fi afterwards.
