Umm, this maybe just me but I think there's a considerable difference between hiphop and gangsta rap. I'd typically call something like The SugarHill Gang hiphop, or GrandMaster Flash. And gangsta rap would typically be something like Eminem.

To give you a few names I haven't seen yet.

If you want clever rapping then I can happily recommend C-Rayz Walz - Year Of The Beast, came out in 2005 and not many people seem to have heard of it. Great little Jay-Z diss in the album but you'll have to be paying attention to notice it on first listen (on First Words Worse if you want to listen for it).

Jay-Z is pretty good although perhaps didn't fulfil his potential (what above diss is about).

Dead Prez are worth a listen.

The Pharcyde are nice mellow hiphop and also clever with it.

Outkast - quite populist rap but very good at it.

Dilated Peoples - Expansion Team is probably their best album.

I'm not a huge fan of Jurassic 5 (J5) personally but it would be remiss not to mention them.

Kurtis Blow - The Breaks and Grandmaster Flash Ft Melle Mel - White Lines are classics in old school rap. :)

wwwhhhaaaaaaaaaat? Jamie T?! Missy elliot and mary j blige?!

Listen to some good music - Cannibal Ox, Mr Lif, El-p, Del the Funkee Homosapien (his album Deltron 3030), Main source, A tribe called Quest, GZA's Liquid Swords is an immense album - probably the best solo work of a wutanger, klashnekoff's a decnt UK rapper, ultramagentic MCs, People under the stairs (their album the next step) is really chilled out.

If you like snoop dogg check out Duces & Trayz with the eastsidaz and Snoop Dogg, some decent tunes on there.

There recent music could be seen as populist, but get some of their older stuff like ATLiens and Aquemani (aswell as Stankonia, if not just for "Humble Mumble" :D) and you'll see how much they've changed.

Already got Aquemini and Stankonia and have had it for years, I don't have ATLiens but I've listened to a few songs off it anyway. I just described them as populist because of the most recent double album (Speakerboxx/The Love Below) which while good doesn't have some of the innovation or harder edges of parts of the earlier stuff. My main problem is I'm refusing to forgive them for The Whole World Ft Killer Mike. :D

bleh i like the new and old outkast stuff , ATliens is my favorite though

this thread needs a whole lot more of

nas - illmatic

possibly one of the best albums of all time imo
