Spec me some memory please !

Right, after much thought I have decided to upgrade from my trust old Q6600. Some may argue that this is a pointless upgrade but for various reasons I want to get some next gen hardware in my machine.

Some reasons are, I'm after a board that will support crossfire and going AM3 will mean I have a few possible upgrade routes for next year.

So far i have the following in my basket;

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 965 Black Edition 3.40GHz

Asus Crosshair III Formula AMD 790FX Motherboard

Now i am after some memory. It has to be 6GB and work efficiently with the kit I've already chosen.

Wont get dual channel 6Gb kit, will be 4 or 8

Will i notice much of a difference between 4 and 8, realistically ?

Not in games, if your using 32bit operating system you can't use more than 4gb anyway

Im using W7 x64 ultimate.

It might be worth getting 4GB for now and getting another set in a few months.

mine is at 3.8 after 1 day of owning it lol i was lucky and got a C3 stepping 955 it's very happy at 3.8 ,1.45v am gonna try pushing for 4ghz later on today.

i didn't try the stock cooler but it does look quite impressive i've got a thread on here on general hardware called new build is here take a look at the stuff i got...

Nice board.

Im going for the Asus because it has a hefty sound card built in.

Going for that corsair ram too, ordering this evening.

Are you running 8-8-8-24 timings? I had to up the voltage to 1.85 with that memory to get it stable with this board.

According to Corsair tech support, running it at anything below 2.0v is fine.

Oh, that's cool then. Did you try upping the voltage a little and forcing lower timings yet?

Nope, I have it running stable at 1600MHz 8-8-8-24 1.85v which I am quite happy with.
