I am going to be building a new sandy bridge PC. I will be going with the asus Maximus IV Extreme and i7 2600k. I will be overclocking. I will be adding 6GB of memory. Can somebody spec me some really good memory please.

Hi there

May I ask what features offered by the Maximus IV Extreme you need? As it is a very expensive board and often the features will not be made use of. Since the board costs over £100 more than other very capable P67 boards then this money could be invested better in other areas.

As for a memory recommendation - may I ask what you are doing with the PC? If it is just gaming then this set would be a good one to go for, however if you use applications (like photoshop) that make good use of more memory then this kit is worth a look.

Thinking about things it may be overkill. As I cannot buy all my parts for a week or so I think I will wait and see which board(s) come out top regards overclocking.

So far it looks like overclocking with Sandy Bridge is limited by the CPUs themselves, not so much the motherboards. Hence, pretty much any decent P67 board can OC a Sandy Bridge CPU extremely well (4.6GHz+).

If you want a nice SB board that has "proper" x8x8 CF/SLI then I would go for this board, I doubt there will be many extra features that you need on the Maximus that are worth the extra £100+.

The Sandy Bridge memory controller is only dual channel. So 6GB isn't an option.

8GB (2x4GB) of 1600MHz DDR3 memory (CAS 8/9) would be my recommendation. If you are into benchmarking then go for faster memory. But if you want the most gaming performance for your £, then your money is best spent elsewhere.
