Having been out of PC gaming for a while due to owning a netbook the last gen of games I played are probably about a decade old :p

However, getting delivery of an HP 8710w laptop shortly ($330, nice!) which has a C2D 2.2Ghz, 2Gb RAM and has a Fx1600m which I believe is about on a par with a 8700MGT. The display is 1900x1200 but I'm not expecting to run too many games (other than proper oldies) at that res!

What would be your suggestions for say, a top 5 games that would run nicely, I'm guessing around the 2007, 2008 era would be about right?

I think Dawn of War 2 is a must have as I love DoW1, I guess Starcraft 2 as well but open to any other suggestions!

2008 you say? Crysis!

Starcraft 2 is a good place to start. You could check out Realm of the Mad God on steam, there is Minecraft also.

TF2
Portal 1/2
BFBC2 (Should run ok on low settings)
Dues ex if thats your bag (didnt like that much personally but is a good game)
Bioshock
Fallout 3
Mirrors edge
Far Cry 2

Some there for ya

Not sure about DoW 2. I would read up a bit on it to make sure you still want it. I loved DoW 1 as well but 2 is pretty different. For instance - no base building. You have about 6 unitsbthat you play with and upgrade along the way. Kind of like your heroes in DoW 1 bit the entire game being 6 unchanging squads of them.

I was interested so i bought it for ~4 quid. Wouldnt spend much more personally tbh.

Half of these will be completely unplayable. My laptop is a 2Ghz c2d, 4GB, 9600MGT 1GB, and at it's native 13** res it wouldn't manage many many of these games on even low settings. The Quadro in the OP is basically a ramped up 8600MGT, and my old laptop with an 8600MGT would struggle with things like the Penny Arcade games!

Max Payne 2 was/is really really cool and should run nicely.

IL2 Sturmovik- a classic

Silent Hunter 3 - a classic that killed the genre

Half Life 2

Race Driver Grid

Thanks peeps, some great suggestions.

I have to chuckle to myself, I was like 'woah, Steam is awesome!' - the last time I heard of it was when they first introduced it and everyone was bitching and moaning about how crap it was :p No wonder Game etc are struggling although I fear it could be a case of my (financial) death by a thousand tiny purchases :p

I picked up Borderlands and Civ4 as they were on sale, Borderlands runs fine at 1280x800, medium detail etc which I was happy with! :)

i loved dow2, but not played dow1.

dow2 is very cheap in alota places, like under a fiver :D

great stoyline and voice acting and lore :), you have a squad and you can change there equipment about and command them.
