Spec me some Scanning software please

At work we use eCopy on a scanning station run by XP which even Canon don't have much idea about now and it keeps letting us down.
They want to sell us a contract for the new eCopy Workstation which will cost a fortune but I think we can do it way cheaper.
Basically we ask our IT Department for a new PC, buy scanning software and connect it to the Canon scanner and job done.
The software needs to be quite basic and we don't need any 'Productivity' features so all we need is to scan up to 500 pages and then save to a PDF on a network drive.

Any ideas?

You could see if VueScan supports your hardware - I wouldn't describe it as "basic," but it's easy enough to set up and use and should do what you want.

Why not just buy a decent copier/scanner with LDAP funtioniality? You could then create a shared folder and all your scans end up in it.

The scanner costs around £5500 (it is a Production Scanner) and scans really fast into a Network folder for all the department.
Our problem is that the PC keeps freezing/locking up and to renew to a new contract with a new PC will cost a lot of money.
