Hi
I'm off to the red bull air racing at ascot next weekend and I'm looking for a few tips on what settings I should use.

Camera canon 5d3 with a EF70-200 L F2.8 lens (plus extender x2)

Hopefully with your help I won't let the camera down :)

When I shot an airshow (ages ago now) I generally shot at a ISO100, f8-f11 with a shutter between 1/80s and 1/200s for prop planes, so you blur the blades but keep the plane in focus as you track it.

For jets I think I used 1/500s - 1/800s, f4-5.6.

As above , sometimes a little panning with the slower shutter
I imagine with the amount of manoeuvring these planes do and at 400mm it could be a tricky day, maybe set the IS to the best mode for it?

Maybe try a few test shots at various shutter speeds to see what the fastest you could get away with ,without making the props look stationary

Thanks again for the tips - I guess it is a case of seeing what happens on the day as at this stage I have no idea as to how close the planes get.
