Spec me some speaker wire

Hi folks,

Just bought myself my first ever hi-fi - it's a Yamaha mini with cd, dab, airplay and phono inputs for my turntable, along with a pair of white Dali Zensor 1s with white grilles.

I'm now in need of some discreet white speaker cable to get them hooked up.

Any suggestions? Should I bother with banana plug ends? Best to buy a load of it and cut to length using a speaker cable cutter? I'll be needing approx. 1 x 2m and 1 x 6m, as the longer one needs to run up and along and down a chimney breast.

Cheers,

Speaker cable doesn't enhance quality, so just get some decently thick stuff.

I kind of thought this, although I have read an awful lot of stuff about how certain cables can make a difference to bass levels. This to me sounds like nonsense but this is coming from whathifi, who should know their stuff I'd have expected.

Any drawbacks to flat cables? I've seen some flat white cables which look like they'd work nicely against the wall. Not sure.

Cheers,

So long as the cross section of copper is high enough you wont hear any difference.. IE dont run tiny thin cables..
Also dont worry about running different length cables... The difference it makes is so tiny as to be imperceptible.... To hear a difference due to how long it takes the signal to travel down the cable one side would have to be hundreds of metres longer.

Get the flat cables and dont worry about it.

I have Dali Lektors on the pc setup, Dali make lovely little speakers.. You will be more than happy with the Zensors imo!

Cheers Sam ;) Yeh I think I'm going to go for standard round cables, thinking about it more. I need to be able to hammer in those cable tie things you use for phone lines along skirting boards etc. Will go for a decent, thick cable with 79 threads it looks like will be best. Maybe QED.

Can't wait to get these Zensor 1s up and running! Going to be beast!

I've got a half roll of flat white speaker cable from which I could cut you your total length. The OFC copper conductors are thick - a little over 2mm sq CSA but being flat it doesn't look bulky like round cable.

FM member Dinzi got some of the same off me for his install. Would work out cheaper than the QED 79 too.

Banana plugs make sense with something like the back of an AV amp where all the connectors are really close. But with a Hi-Fi with either binding posts or spring clips then there's less of a need. If you want some though I can do them as well.

If you're interested LMK and I'll chuck an ad on MM

Cheers will give it a think! I think round ones would be better for my use though, as they'll be easier to attach to the chimney/walls/ceiling.

What HiFI WISH they were credible! :p

I haven't read their magazine in a while, but the last time I read it, they were still insisting that different HDMI cables gave different pictures, and the general conclusions were that the more expensive ones were the "best" and also happened to be made by companies that were sponsoring them. So make of that what you will.

Interesting. What a sham, in that case!
