My young son has just bought a turntable with his own money but the sound output is terrible through the supplied speakers.

Apparently, you can add better quality speakers using RCA cables supplied.

Anyone recommend any reasonably priced speakers with RCA input that could be bought for his xmas, to cheer him up , and ensure his money wasn't wasted?

They have to have a pre-amp included inside too, whatever that means

What's a reasonable price mean to you?
I think the lowest price decent ones I've seen are the JBL 104BT at £189
If the budget is higher I would look at Klipsch Fives

Its a GPO Soho table and the £189 speakers are about the price we were looking at.

We are considering Edifier RS1280DBs and a pre-amp, at the moment

Ok first do you have the name/model of the turn table?

RCA jacks can get used for a lot of things and as a result the signal level differs on the purpose. They could be:
* speaker connections - if so we’d beed to know the speaker impedance and power of the internal amp.
* line level outputs - if so the speakers connected would need to be amplifying and have a volume control etc.
* photo level output - if so it would need a RIAA compensating phono amplification as part of the speakers etc. i assume it’s a moving magnet catridge.

If we know the model perhaps we can help decipher this got you.

Sorry - blind - GPO Soho table..

The back panel - if it’s same as the photos i’ve seen are:

Ear out - basically a mono headphone output.
Line out - this is what you will be interested in. It’s a low voltage output after the inbuilt phono amp.
DC in power jack.

So the way to connect this is using a line in to an amplifier then to speakers - this can all together as an active speaker bundle.

This assumes that their cartridge and phono amp are of reasonable quality. Plus the tracking is aligned (i assume there’s no tracking alignment for the needle).

If they are active and take a line in then you’ll not need the preamp (as long as the speakers have a volume control).
