Hello again,

Just got an X-Fi Extreme Gamer, and am after a set of speakers to use with them. Some type of surround would be nice, but I'm on a bit of a budget lol. £50 tops (student life lol). Any suggestions?

And another silly question: does it make a difference which PCI slot I have the X-Fi installed in? I know it made a difference with things like PCI modems, but I'm not sure about soundcards

It shouldn't make a difference which PCI slot it's in.

I have my Extreme Music in any old one.

I have some Aego M's which sound brilliant, but new there quite pricey but 2nd hand you may be able to pick some up.

If you don't my buying second hand it's always the best way to go.

what will it be for?

If it's mainly for music like mine you'd be better with a decent 2.1/2.0 setup (T10/20's come to mind) but if you like films/games, may be better for you to go with a 5.1 setup.

Are you looking for surround sound in games or in films? If you want 3D effect in games then I think a £50 set of audiophile headphones (Audio Technica, Sennheiser etc) will be a better investment that a cheap Creative or Logitech 5.1 setup. X-Fi's 3D surround effects in games with headphones is great, possibly more accurate that 5 speakers in 'true 5.1'.
However, I you want films in surround then speakers are the way but £50 won't really get you far for that. Although it is possible

Give us a bit more info on what you plan to be using them for

Heard good things about the X-540's but don't expect miracles for the price. They get very good reviews though, whilst the Z-5500's get awesome reviews.

I personally also don't like headphones that much but only because they get uncomfortable after a while, make my ears... "damp" and can also be too sharp with the sounds unlike speakers. The trick with speakers though is that you HAVE TO set them up right to start with or you will get really bad results. You can't really get a set of headphones wrong which is why they are considered more accurate.

do you know of any specific good surround headphones for ~£50?

No worries people, just picked up 2nd hand set of Creative 7.1s on a certain auction site. lol

They'll do the job but as Scougar says, take some time setting them up right.

People don't speak too well of 5.1 headphones, bit gimmicky and low quality. Good stereo ones with X-Fi's CMSS3D do a great job with 3D sound in games. And will be great for music/films too
