Hello

I'm looking to upgrade my current machine...

Abit AW9D-MAX Intel 975X (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 (2.4ghz)
Corsair 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 XMS2
MSI Geforce 7900GS 512
OCZ Stealth Xtream 500W PSU

...so that it can handle most of the modern games well on my old 21" ViewSonic 1680x1050 monitor. What do you guys think would help my system?

I was thinking I might upgrade my graphics card, add more memory and get a couple of large capacity hard drives that I need for storage.

I don't really have a budget but just want to improve it sufficiently enough to play modern games and last me for a while before I can afford a whole new build.

So theres the challenge - what would you do with that?

sell the 2GB ram, then buy a 4GB ddr2 kit.

pull that 7900GS out and put a GTX460 768mb in.

buy a cheap cooler and squeeze some more speed out of the CPU.

DDR2 ram is fairly expensive and if your not runnning a 64bit operating system you wont ultilse it fully.

but games run so much better with 4gb than 2gb, even 3.4gb or whatever the 32bit limit is will be a great improvement.

Stulids right.
Games are becoming terribly bloated and the more ram you have the better.
I would - as mentioned - sell the 2GB stuff, get some decent 4GB 1066MHz RAM, clock the nuts off the cpu (as they are decent clockers) and get a new gen graphics card, such as the GTX460 mentioned, or a HD6850 if you can get the money :p

If your operting system can't utilise all the available ram I would assume you would not see any positive gains?

did you not see my whole post? 3.4gb or whatever the addressable limit of 32bit OS is is so much better than 2gb.

Would I need an after market cooler if I was gonna clock the cpu? Also I've not done much of that before so would probably require some help.

Nope, skim read, but yes I see were your coming from :).

Any way the op is looking to upgrade to 64 bit operating system.

Without 64bit, you can use around 3.7GB.

3.7GB > 2GB, right? :p
Therefore better for gaming

Yes :), just had the cost in of new ddr2 in my mind.

If you can sell your E6600 and get a Q6600 or a Q6700 for around £80 it would be a good upgrade for games like BFBC2. I have a 975X based motherboard in my main PC with a Q6600 and 4GB of DDR2. I want to upgrade to a HD6850 1GB or GTX460 1GB in the next few months and it should mean that my computer will hopefully be fine for gaming for the next year or so.
